»Amériques« ist das Werk eines Träumers. Edgard Varèse, 1883 im kosmopolitischen Paris geboren, hatte die Kühnheit, Europa für sein Denken klein und eng zu finden. Zu einer Zeit, als Paris ein Vorbild für die Neue Welt war und immense nordamerikanische Künstler anzog, bewegte sich Varèse in die entgegengesetzte Richtung. Es kam im Dezember 1915 in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika an und die ersten Skizzen von »Amériques« wurden genau in diesem Jahr geschrieben. Es gibt völlige Freiheit in Form der Musik, die keinem vordefinierten Plan gehorcht. Die Abfolge unerwarteter Zeiten scheint dem Rhythmus zu folgen, den wir beim Gehen durch die Straßen von New York finden würden. Die Rhythmen der Percussion-Sektion führen uns zu einer industrielleren Realität, mit dem Geräusch von Zusammenstößen und Sirenen aus dem Hafen oder von der Feuerwehr oder dem Pfeifen von Dampfmaschinen. Insgesamt ist »Amériques« ein groß angelegtes Werk, das jedoch Momente der Intimität und des Rückzugs sowie brutale und explosive Kontraste durchläuft. In gewisser Weise repräsentiert es das Ende einer Ära und den Beginn einer neuen.
Das Konzert mit dem Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música wurde am 18.01.2019 aufgenommen, es dirigiert Baldur Brönnimann.

»Amériques« is the work of a dreamer. Edgard Varèse, born in cosmopolitan Paris in 1883, had the audacity to find Europe small and narrow for his thinking. At a time when Paris was a role model for the New World and attracted many North American artists, Varèse was moving in the opposite direction. He arrived in the United States in December 1915 and the first sketches of »Amériques« were written that very year. There is complete freedom in the form of music that does not obey a pre-defined plan. The sequence of unexpected times seems to follow the rhythm we would find walking the streets of New York. The rhythms of the percussion section lead us to a more industrial reality, with the sound of clashes and sirens from the port or from the fire department or the whistle of steam engines. All in all, »Amériques« is a large-scale work, but it goes through moments of intimacy and retreat as well as brutal and explosive contrasts. In a way, it represents the end of an era and the beginning of a new one.
