แม้ว่าเกม Open World ส่วนใหญ่จะได้แรงบันดาลใจมาจาก Grand Theft Auto จาก Rockstar Games แต่ไม่ใช่กับ Ghost of Tsushima เกมล่าสุดของ Sucker Punch

โดยคุณ Nate Fox ผู้กำกับ Ghost of Tsushima ได้ให้สัมภาษณ์กับทาง Gaming Bible และเปิดเผยว่า Red Dead Redemption ภาคแรก คือแรงบันดาลใจอันดับ 1 ของเกมซามูไรในโลกเปิดกว้างของพวกเขา เหตุเพราะทาง Rockstar สามารถจับเอาบรรยากาศของโลกทัศน์ และความรู้สึกของคาวบอยนอกกฎหมายในโลกตะวันตกได้อย่างสมบูรณ์แบบ

"ผมจะบอกว่า แรงบันดาลใจอันดับหนึ่งของ Ghost of Tsushima คือ Red Dead Redemption ไม่ใช่ Red Dead 2 นะ แต่เป็น Red Dead Redemption ภาคแรก เพราะพวกเขาทำผลงานที่ยอดเยี่ยม ด้วยการนำเสนอความแฟนตาซีของการเป็นคาวบอยนอกกฎหมายให้เล่นได้จริง"
