[Can you hear us? - The Story of Mrs Cheng - 27Oct, 14 / HKT 09:00]
The Harcourt Road was crowded with tents and people. In the midst of them was a supply tent, and Mrs Cheng, aged 72, was sitting at a corner inside. She said, when she saw the students being arrested on the night of 26/9, it moved her completely. She had to come out! On 28/9, she was there when they fired the tear-gas shells. She recalled that the students were protecting her right to the end. They said: "Madam, don't charge! Let us charge!" She was touched.
Since then, she comes to the "Umbrella Square" almost everyday. At the beginning, there were scarce supplies. The students slept on the road without even a blanket, so she took upon herself to carry 8 double-size quilts to the site. Later, she hauled 20 bottles of water by herself as well.
"They were moved when they received it. Some even cried; they made me cry as well."
From moving supplies, folding paper umbrella, or sometime just sitting aside quietly, the old lady humbly dismissed her efforts as trivial matters. And yet, I felt heartache when she said she carried 8 quilts and 20 bottles of water by herself. What give this 72 years old lady such immense strength?
Mrs Cheng's husband is already more than 80 years old. Although he could not come by himself, he supports her fully in spirit. Each day, Mrs Cheng has breakfast and lunch with her husband. She would then prepare dinner for him before heading away for Admiralty.
"I promise him I would be home by 9."
Before we leave, we happened to stumble upon Mrs Cheng's son-in- law. They were surprised by each other! "Oh no!" The old lady said embarrassingly: "Don't tell my daughter that I come here!" It turns out that many in her family were not happy about her coming here, but the younger man consoled her: "Don't worry. She'll be fine with it. It's a good thing! See, I'm here too."
Finally, Mrs Cheng would like to tell Hong Kong: "Carry on Hong Kongers! You will prevail!"
