More than 1,000 orangutans live in the Sungai Putri forest. It is reportedly one of the last habitats in the world for Bornean orangutans. Indonesia’s government vowed to protect the area from commercial exploitation, but a recent investigation found at least six illegal logging outposts operating in the area over the past year under the cover of night.

More than 100,000 Bornean orangutans were killed from 1999-2016 — logging hunting and land clearing have made them an endangered species. “Habitat destruction forces orangutans to enter neighboring plantations and farms looking for food, and this frequently leads to conflict with humans,” explained Karmele Llano Sanchez, program director of International Animal Rescue. “Sungai Putri is home to one of the largest populations in the world and we are at a critical point for the Bornean orangutan, without forests like this they can’t survive.”
