How to Work Out the Salvation that is in you
“What I’m getting at, friends, is that you should simply keep on doing what you’ve done from the beginning. When I was living among you, you lived in responsive obedience. Now that I’m separated from you, keep it up. Better yet, redouble your efforts. Be energetic in your life of salvation, reverent and sensitive before God. That energy is God’s energy, an energy deep within you, God himself willing and working at what will give him the most pleasure.” (Philippians 2:12-13 MSG)
I love the translation above that really explains what the apostle Paul meant by “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling”.
He is not asking us to complete our salvation by works as if we are not already saved.
Instead, he was encouraging the church to let the fruit of salvation be made visible to all. Paul was writing to saved believers who were walking in faith when he was physically present with them.
When Paul wrote this letter to the Philippian believers, he was writing from prison. So he was encouraging them to continue walking faithfully, and even more so when he was not physically present.
This walking in faith is not to please or impress Paul or any man, but as worship towards God.
Then Paul proceeded to explain how a believer can continue to walk in faith and obedience towards God.
It is not by willpower or trying to impress men when they are looking. The Holy Spirit inside you supplies both the willingness and ability to do what is pleasing to God.
This is a manifestation of His manifold grace, so rely on the Holy Spirit and be led by Him. Children of God are led by Him to do what is pleasing to God.
There is no point being saved and keeping the fruit of your salvation dormant inside your spirit. Work out the salvation that you have in your spirit. Let it shine forth in your soul and body so that the world may see, and give glory to God who is in Heaven!
Every day just pray, asking, “Holy Spirit, what shall we do today?” He will lead you by His peace first and by confirmation from others and things around you if you need further assurance. This happens so you can cheerfully do what God wants you to do!
