I’ve always wanted to learn a Native American language, but it’s been extremely difficult to find anyone with whom I could learn as most indigenous American languages are considered critically endangered or extinct. So a couple months ago I was extremely excited to get in touch with someone who could teach me Navajo, the original language of the Navajo people who live mostly in the Navajo Nation located in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. Less than 200,000 people speak Navajo in the entire world. Navajo is hands down the hardest language I’ve ever studied, with extremely challenging pronunciation and one of the most complex grammatical systems of any extant language. It’s so complex that the language was used by the Navajo code talkers as the basis for a secret communication system during World War II.

But even though many young people no longer speak the language, the older generation often still does, and so after a month of studying the language and me and my crew’s COVID vaccinations we flew out to New Mexico to find locals to practice with. For this episode, we embarked on an EPIC CHEAT DAY where I LOST MY ABS IN 6 HOURS! Steven, a long-time friend and semiregular guest star, suggested that we should head over to the East side of Singapore for a cheat day as there are many malls in close proximity there. Beginning at Tampines 1 and ending at Waterway Point, I ate 12 dishes from 4 different malls, resulting in a massive 7-inch increase in waist circumference.

It was a hard push towards the end, evident from my extremely distended midsection. My normally visible abdominals gave way to a turgid and swollen belly. However, it allowed me to satisfy my cravings in between my usually strict dieting between shoots. I was pleased with Steven’s choice of malls as they had good selections of food and drinks while mostly being walking distance from one another.

Due to travel restrictions, we could not fly home to Sabah for Dad’s 4th Year Death Anniversary prayers, so we decided to pay homage to the old man by taking a trip down to “Passage Thru’ India” - a favourite restaurant of his that recently has gone through a refurbishment.

Passage Thru’ India has won awards for its thematic decor as well as its delicious and authentic recipes from different parts of India.

They take pride in ensuring the dishes are as original to the recipe as possible, even flying the spices over from India itself, or making them on their own.

We were extremely lucky to meet Chef Gaya Jo, the Head Chef and daughter of the founder. I was feeling a little star-struck, (as I follow her instagram recipes, so seeing her in person was really something special), and it was really nice to have her introduce the restaurant’s star dishes personally to us, and to explain what they were one-by one .

Kakak and I could hardly recognise the place since our last visit there, and we find out why in this vlog.

I highly recommend coming to eat and dine here. There's plenty to see, and lots to eat. Just come with an empty stomach ... and oh! A fully charged smartphone to learn new things and to capture special moments!
