Inside Gucci’s exhibition ‘No Space, Just a Place. Eterotopia’, held at the Daelim Museum in Seoul. Propelled by Creative Director Alessandro Michele’s meditations on society, the exhibition proposes a new definition of what an “other space” might be: a place to build a different, desirable future with new ways for humans to relate to each other and to their surroundings. Every project is thematically tied to the idea of the alternative spaces as a utopian place in which to set new empowering narratives, dwelling on the understanding of otherness, the exploration of minoritarian identities and queer politics. The acknowledgment of the moment of great uncertainty that humanity is currently experiencing now furtherly encourages reflections on alternative modes of being and consuming in relation to one’s environment. Curated by Myriam Ben Salah—recently appointed Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago—the exhibit features independent and alternative art spaces as well as international artists’ works including Martine Syms’ video installation ‘Notes on Gesture’ (image 1), Olivia Erlanger’s ‘Ida, Ida, Ida!’ (image 2), Kang Seung Lee’s wallpaper installation ‘Covers (QueerArch)’ and Meriem Bennani’s ‘Party on the CAPS’ (Image 4). Set up by Archivio Personale, the exhibit will run until July 12, 2020.

Propelled by Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele’s meditations on society and reflections on eterotopia and curated by Myriam Ben Salah, the new exhibition ‘No Space, Just A Place’ is held at the Daelim Museum in Seoul—a location part of the Gucci Places network. The exhibit features independent art spaces where artists were invited to give their own definition of what an “other space” might be. Pictured here in the first image is the work of artist Sungsil Ryu—showcased by Boan 1942—exploring the notion of artificial paradises. Her installation ‘Psychedelic Nature’ focuses on secular superstitions and fictitious narratives that link human beings to nature. Image 2 features Hapjungjigu that presents the work of painter Jun Hyerim who unpacks through her three dimensional canvases the notion of Arcadia, with its interestingly ambivalent meaning in Korean—meaning both the “ideal land” and the “impossible to realize”. Tastehouse’s project ‘Tasteview Daelim Branch’ (seen in image 3, 4 and 5) reflects on the notion of value of art and how that value exists within a commercial space. Building an alternative commercial looking space within the museum, a ‘non-sale shop’, Tastehouse reconnects with the true value of the objects and the status of the viewer as a consumer. ‘No Space, Just a Place’ will run until July 12, 2020. Images from ‘No Space, Just A Place’, a new exhibition propelled by Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele’s meditations on society and reflections on eterotopia. Curated by Myriam Ben Salah, the exhibition spans across the floors of the Daelim Museum in Seoul—a location part of the Gucci Places network—and features independent art spaces which have been invited to give their own definition of what an “other space” might be. Historically underground venues that populate storefronts, lofts, warehouses and other places abandoned by the mainstream, these independent art spaces first appeared in Seoul in the late 90s and are famous for promoting work that is often politically engaged, experimental, and more concerned with artistic debates than commercial viability.
Seen here in images 1 and 2 is ‘Room’, a project exhibited by the independent art space OF that reflects on the notion of domesticity, of separation between the inside and the outside through three distinct rooms displaying different levels of privacy. Featured in images 3 and 4 is ‘Secret for Longevity’ by White Noise, which reflects on how to reinvent an artist’s identity through collaboration. In images 5 and 6 the independent art space Post Territory Ujeongguk displays ‘Lunar Real Estate’ by artist Kang Woohyeok, where he projects onto the moon the possibility of owning land – a crucial need in Seoul and its immediate region.
‘No Space, Just a Place’ will run until July 12, 2020. Take a virtual tour of the exhibition with a special 360 video available on.gucci.com/_NoSpaceJustAPlace360.
