You better go back home earlier tonight as hungry ghosts wander all around Hong Kong TODAY!
Check out new YouTube video here: https://youtu.be/IByOeRCLWfE
In the Chinese society, the seventh month in the lunar calendar is considered as "Ghost month". The gates of hell open and restless spirits roam the world. Today is the 14th day of the seventh lunar month, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival 盂蘭節. People appease the angry ghost after the ghost have wander the earth for two weeks. You will find locals burning paper offerings in Tin can on the roadsides everywhere in these few weeks. Food like Tofu, and bean sprout, which are easy to chew, will also be offered to make sure the ghost are not hungry so that they will not get angry. (You can buy a bowl of food for the ghosts including Tofu, bean sprout and rice in the wet market)
We also avoid water activities (Older generation says the water ghosts will pull you down to the water) and going back home late.
You used to see huge ceremonies held around HK on the Ghost month. But many is still cancelled this year due to the strict social distancing rule. The photos here show you the ceremony held in 中區卅間街坊盂蘭會 Staunton street, Central in 2019.
There was one held in Sycamore Playground in Tai Kok Tsui this year (ended on 19/8). The Chinese Opera started at 6pm, so I decided to go back home earlier instead 😅
The Chinese opera is actually for the ghosts to watch such that they won’t wander around and cause trouble!

What is this lady doing 😱 SOUND ON - today is the day to hit your Villain and the petty people around you 打小人!
We were under the Canal Road flyover just now! In case you missed our LIVE just now, go to YouTube now: https://youtu.be/gnxK7UgkNnk
People came all the way to Causewaybay and waited for 3 hours (check out the LAST photo!) just to hire these experienced old ladies to hit the petty people around them!
These old ladies will first ask her client to write down the names of the petty people/villain on a villain paper and then hit this paper with a shoe.
The lady also put a piece of greasy pork into the mouth of the 🐅 tiger 🐯 (second photo) 祭白虎so that the tiger can’t open its mouth and bite you!
Why today?
驚蟄 (Gangzat) is one of the solar term in the tradiional chinese solar system, which falls on the 5th March this year. Chinese people believe that hibernating insects and snakes awake on this day (also petty people and your villain!).
Where is it? under than Canal Road flyover 鵝頸橋底 (5 minutes walk from Times Square, Causewaybay)

Exploring traditional family-run goldsmiths is definitely more fun than visiting one of the chain goldsmiths in Nathan Road.
There used to be so many Goldsmiths in Shanghai Street and Lee Hing 利興珠寶金行 is the few remaining ones now - where my grandma used to get her gold jewelleries and buy presents for her children and grandchildren.
You can still find pieces with traditional design which are handmade or even tailor-made by the shop owner. You can still find hand-written price tag hanging on the ring with a red string. If you broke your jade bangle, bring it to them and they might still be able to repair it by inlaying gold.
For chinese, buying gold is like putting money in the bank. People used to buy small pieces of gold with loops and chain them around their waistbands. So even if they fell into the sea, they will not lose their fortune.
Gold is also a very precious gift that people offer Dragon and Phoenix Bangles (龍鳳鈪) to newlyweds, gold bangles to babies during their one-month old birthday and gold longevity peach to the elderlies on their Grand birthday celebration.
