柏林圍牆倒塌後，西德與東德統一為今日的德國，柏林不再有著圍牆分隔著同一座城市裡的居民。這看似值得德意志民族慶賀的歷史事件卻隱含著許多待解決的社會問題。

30 年過去了，兩德雖然統一，但國內仍瀰漫著歷史背景導致的價值觀分裂，困擾著德國政治。 東德人常感覺自己像德國裡的二等公民。這尤其體現於經濟發展上。儘管東部城市的生活水準逐漸提高，但兩地最大的差別在於東部缺少大型企業或高收入工作機會。

這也使得許多東部人認為，德國政府在幫助外國人（如難民）時做了太多，反而忽視了國內社會問題。這樣的不滿也間接造成極右派勢力的興起。
