美國聯邦最高法院駁回賓州共和黨議員的聲請,拒絕否認賓州250萬郵寄選票的效力,也拒絕由共和黨控制的賓州州議會自行遴選總統選舉人的無理要求。

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected an effort to overturn the results of the presidential election in Pennsylvania, signaling the high court would not go along with President Trump's unprecedented efforts to win another term despite a decisive defeat in the popular vote and Electoral College.
The lawsuit was brought by Republican Rep. Mike Kelly, who argued a 2019 state law authorizing universal mail-in voting is unconstitutional and that all ballots cast by mail in the general election in Pennsylvania should be thrown out.

Primaries and Disqualifications (Lee Yee)
Elsie Leung said, not disclosing all of the provisions of the National Security Law (NSL) is to prevent invoking clashes in society, and that the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPCSC) has already conducted sufficient consultations with different sectors.
Without disclosing the provisions of the NSL, what was used to consult these different sectors? This point alone discloses how absolutely absurd the so-called “sufficient consultations”, “different sectors”, and frankly, her entire statement are.
There have been commotions in the online community around the suggestion of achieving international sanctions through large-scale disqualifications, focusing mainly on the contradictions between the pro-democracy camp’s primaries and a large number of candidates. Primaries mean an aggregation of votes, to avoid an overextended list of candidates who would be dividing up the votes and possibly leading to the reduction of the number of elected seats. Most of the pro-democracy camp, including young candidates, are supportive of having primaries. The primary selection mechanism stipulates that only the winners are able stand for election. Some suggested that even the losers from the primaries should go ahead and stand for election, and were criticized for violating the principles of primaries.
These principles, however, were drafted before the NSL. It was when the legal profession and some Democrats still believed there was room for negotiation, when the retired former Chief Justice Honorable Andrew Li Kwok-nang proposed to protect the implementation details within Hong Kong under the premise of accepting the NSL. Some Democrats also suggested to bring back Article 23 in place of the implementation of the NSL by NPC, or to adopt the sunset clause. If the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is willing to bargain, the red line for disqualifications of candidates could be drawn at the absolute “anti-NSL”, while turning a blind eye towards the Democrats who are willing to negotiate, such that LegCo would continue to have “decorative” Democrats.
The CCP categorically rejected all bargaining, and Andrew Li accused the Hong Kong NSL as completely undermining the independent judicial power guaranteed by the Basic Law. Martin Lee stated that “the Hong Kong NSL must be resisted fully”, and “people whose attention is being diverted to the devil in the details have already fallen into the trap devised by the CCP”. Moderates who wish to main the current system, to avoid “scorching-earth”, are already at a dead end.
The complete societal rift induced by the NSL is simple: on one side, you have people who blindly support an NSL without any disclosed provisions, including the pro-Beijing camp and the voluntarily “visually-impaired”; on the other side, you have citizens who support democracy. According to a poll conducted by the Hong Kong Institute of Public Opinion at the end of last month, 96% of the “supporters of the pro-democracy camp” opposed the NSL, and only 1% supported the law; Among those who are “non supporters of the pro-democracy camp”, 62% expressed support towards having the NSL implemented by the NPC, but those who opposed still amounted to 29%.
This was a poll done a month ago. With those who were willing to negotiate being rejected at this point, the societal rift should be more apparent. The situation is clear: any participant of the pro-democracy camp’s primaries, given that they have not been too vocal about opposing the NSL, even if they do win the primaries, have are able to join the election without being disqualified, they could still end up not winning the election. If citizens are to woefully cast their votes for candidates who do not oppose the NSL, looking at the poll, there’s only a 1% chance among the “supporters of the pro-democracy camp”.
Another situation that is clear: those who have openly and clearly opposed the NSL and somehow escape the fate of disqualification of candidacy is almost impossible. Even if there were, the voters would be doubtful of the candidates’ true stance, leading to a slim chance of getting elected.
As such, for the pro-democracy candidates, it is almost impossible to either oppose the NSL or to be disqualified for opposing. This, is precisely why the original intent of an aggregation of votes through the mechanism of primaries is likely to fail.
Disregard the results of the primaries. Flood the election with a loud and clear message of anti-NSL from a whale of candidates. This is the only way out. Having all or the majority being disqualified would be an obvious deprivation of Hongkongers’ right to vote, a guaranteed way to get international attention.
How much of a shockwave will international sanctions send to the CCP? An opinion piece published in Taiwan suggested that a senior Chinese official who may be sanctioned by the US because of the Hong Kong NSL has hidden assets in the US that are worth as much as US$3.1 billion. In 2013, Snowden, a former CIA employee who is now in Russia, announced that Chinese officials’ foreign deposits amounted to US$4.8 trillion. In normal circumstances, cash holdings account for only one-third of total assets, meaning that the total assets should amount to tens of trillions of US dollars (Hong Kong’s foreign exchange reserves are only about US$440 billion). And these were figures from 7 years ago.
International sanctions are, inevitably, internationally “earth-scorching”, where the side carrying out the sanctions will also suffer immensely. Freezing the assets of sanctioned officials in foreign countries will not help the sanctioning parties at all. Senior Chinese officials could care less about the Basic Law and Hong Kong’s human rights, but to laugh off one’s own properties? This is Hong Kong’s “earth-scorching” bargaining chip.

Time for a decisive battle (Lee Yee)
I wrote yesterday that “when the number of disqualified candidates reaches the maximum, the international community would come forth”. My friend reckons this a “new strategy”. Instead of a strategy, it is, I would say, the last option left by the National Security Law. Some agree, while others do not. A few raise questions or doubts. Here are my thoughts.
相關新聞:Paradoxical theory of Hong Kong organising U.S. riots (Lee Yee)
The US is leading the fight, with Japan coordinating with the foreign ministers of seven countries, the European Union claiming to indict China in the International Court of Justice in Hague, and the civilized world reacting way more intensely to the NSL than to the violation of human rights in Xinjiang concentration camp. Mike Pompeo’s comments, like “rogue behaviour” and “a choice between freedom and tyranny”, are harsh enough. All of this begs the question of what the US and the West are waiting for. With the NSL draft already released, why did Pompeo ask people to wait and see the results of the Legislative Council (LegCo) Election in September?
Although the NSL is disapproved by most of the civilized countries, both verbal censure and actual sanctions hinge on the LegCo Election in September - “an essential indicator”. But Why?
相關新聞:American violence v.s. Hong Kong violence (Lee Yee)
Pompeo has made it clear that if the CCP makes Hong Kong the same as Shanghai or Shen Zhen in the LegCo Election, the US will take Hong Kong as just another city in China, which means revoking all special treatment Hong Kong has been enjoying. Hong Kongers will be apparently victimized with a bitterly crumbling economy, even though Pompeo has not exactly said so.
Are Hong Kongers willing to be on the receiving end of it all? If Hong Kong’s pro-democracy camp shows acceptance of the NSL at the nomination stage of the LegCo Election, and gets elected with considerable votes, then the message delivered to the US would be that Hong Kongers are prepared to surrender to tyranny. To this end, the US will stop short of being meddlesome while deploying all defensive moves against Hong Kong like what it has been doing against China.
However, if Hong Kongers take to the streets as fiercely as what they did in the anti-extradition protests last year, it will go without saying that these freedom fighters are willing to stand at the frontline of global defence against tyranny.
The referendum on NSL walkout held last Saturday, which was not well publicized and prepared, has projected a wrong message to the international community: not many people are up in arms over the NSL. In light of this, the message conveyed to the world by the LegCo Election is pivotal.
The abovementioned pertain to the external situation. Internally, I have come across many online comments made by those who have no confidence in the pan-democracy camp. They believe there must be some candidates from the pan-democracy camp who will approve of the NSL in a bid to get qualified for the election, and urge the public to vote for them for collective interests. Some say that the incumbent legislators did not even dare to object to the National Anthem Law, not to mention saying no to the NSL. They suspect that the pan-democracy camp would sign an election agreement in which supporting the NSL is part of the deal, or the candidates would answer yes when asked by returning officers whether they side with the NSL, in order to take a seat in the LegCo.
Soon comes the primary election for the pro-democracy camp, and their real stance will be revealed in the debates.
The predicament Hong Kong is facing looks grim. The pan-democracy camp might not succumb to the NSL for being qualified for the election. But in case they do, I hope all the young people who care about the future of Hong Kong enroll in the election at their discretion, regardless of the primary election results, prescriptions or ethics. The more candidates running for seats of the LegCo, the voice are more widely spread. Imagine the picture when hundreds of candidates are disqualified. How can the US stand by?
If the Chinese Communist Party decides to step back for a while, and selectively disqualify a few youngsters, will too many candidates on the list dilute the votes and as a result only few are elected? Don’t worry. If that happens, some candidates from the pro-democracy camp will have to drop out in an attempt to secure enough votes for the seats. In election forums, the pro-establishment camp is bound to lose in the debates about the NSL. That being said, anyone who blatantly disapproves of the NSL is almost certainly to be disqualified.
Tam Yiuchung has mentioned that candidates must sign an agreement to show support for the Basic Law, and pledge loyalty to Hong Kong SAR. It is harmless to do so with these two terms, yet in no circumstances should they sign an agreement to show support for the NSL for the reason that so many clauses in the NSL violate the Basic Law. Their refusal should be made public so that the whole world knows how many LegCo candidates are disqualified after saying no to the NSL.
The NSL for Hong Kong has already been deplored by all civilized countries. The focus should be put on the revolt against the NSL in this LegCo Election. Other slogans like “independence of Hong Kong”, “self-determination”, “five demands”, and “liberate Hong Kong”, etc. should give way to avoid losing focus. The US and the western civilization only focus on the NSL for Hong Kong. The LegCo election is a decisive battle that is worth a fight.

It’s that time of year again! I know it’s a bit early to be talking about this, but Halloween at the Kawakami household starts VERY early each year. We get excited talking about our costumes and how we’re gonna decorate the house. This video is about the former—our costumes!
This year I’m a bit torn between dressing up as someone really pretty (Audrey Hepburn) or Taka’s recommendation—Pico Taro. If you don’t know who he is, please be sure to Google him. You’ll get a good laugh out of it. Taka thinks we’ll have more fun if I dress up as Pico Taro and since we can’t decide we’d like to have you guys decide for us by voting on Instagram Stories. If you go now to Instagram Stories, you can vote for what my costume should be. The results of the vote will be posted on our Facebook account.

No longer a one-man show or half of a dynamic duo, AI (17.9 ppg, 5.4 apg) is blending his considerable skills into an ensemble cast that's used to winning big.
"It's always an honor to be named an All-Star and it's a blessing to be in this league," said Iverson, twice the Game's MVP. "Being named an All-Star makes it that much more special. The fact that the fans have voted me onto the team makes this a great honor and it's truly appreciated."
The final results of fan balloting didnt exactly bring any major surprises.
Miamis Dwyane Wade (2,741,413) and Detroits Allen Iverson (1,804,649) will be in the Easts backcourt, alongside reigning All-Star MVP LeBron James of Cleveland (2,940,823) and Bostons Kevin Garnett (2,066,833), who beat New Jerseys Yi Jianlian for the starting nod by 253,004 votes.
The All-Star game is always so meaningful to me because of the fans, said James, whose 24.3-point scoring average is the highest in All-Star game history for players with four or more appearances.
Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers (2,805,397) was the Wests top vote-getter, and will be joined at guard by New Orleans Chris Paul (2,134,798). At center, Yao (2,532,958) will start for the sixth time, along with forwards Tim Duncan of San Antonio (2,578,168) and Amare Stoudemire of Phoenix (1,460,429).
When I first heard I was leading in votes, I was shocked, to be honest with you, Howard said. I really didnt expect anything considering you have guys like Kobe, LeBron and Dwyane.
Howard entered Thursday averaging 20.2 points, 14.1 rebounds and 3.2 blocks for the Magic, who took the leagues best overall record (33-8) into a home game against the reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics.
But on the national stage, Howard still might be best-known for his exploits in last years All-Star dunk contest in New Orleans, with his cape sailing on one jam and capping his night by using teammate Jameer Nelson as a prop in another slam.
Thats his element there. Hes an entertainer. He loves it, Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. I think sometimes people look at that kind of thing, where Dwights out there having a good time, and they doubt the seriousness of a guy. Thats not the case at all. Hes very serious about winning and very serious about being a great player.
Van Gundy likened Howards All-Star antics to what the NBA has come to see from another giant jokester—Shaquille ONeal.
Like Shaq, Dwight is a great person who loves to make other people smile and laugh, Van Gundy said. Thats what really makes him go. He likes to have a good time and he likes to help other people have a good time. Its his nature. Its his character.
That all being said, ONeal is reluctant to anoint Howard as the games, well, next Shaq.
Hes a good player, but everything hes done Ive invented, so Im not impressed, ONeal said. For me to get my eyes wide open about another big man, hell have to do something that I havent seen before or something that I havent invented. Everything that hes done, Ive invented it.
For Garnett, its his 12th All-Star selection—second-most among active players behind ONeals 14 trips. ONeal could see that total increase by one; he could easily be announced as a reserve when coaches balloting to fill out the seven remaining spots on each roster are announced next week.
Its like a good wave, man, Garnett said. If youve surfed the boogie board, you know you ride it til it dies out. And I love boogie boarding. Its all about that good wave and holding on and holding on for dear life. And once its over, you crash and you go out and try to find the next one.
Much like the East, the West voting was a bit predictable.
Stoudemires spot turned out to be the most vulnerable; he nipped San Antonios Bruce Bowen—who isnt even starting for the Spurs right now—in the starters balloting by 68,031 votes.
Plenty of late voting helped shape the West starting five.
The leagues next-to-last voting update, released on Jan. 22, showed Denvers Carmelo Anthony—whos currently sidelined with an injured right hand — ahead of Stoudemire by 10,431 votes, plus Houstons Tracy McGrady leading by a 157,063-vote margin over Paul.
Neither lead held up.
Paul wound up prevailing by nearly a half-million ballots, and Stoudemire took his appeals directly to voters.
Stoudemire launched an Internet campaign—www.vote4Amare.com—and Anthony said Thursday he probably would have given him the spot anyway.
Hes in Phoenix, Anthony, who finished fifth among West forwards behind the starters, Bowen and Houstons Ron Artest, told The Denver Post. Its his All-Star game.
In all, five players (Howard, James, Bryant, Wade and Duncan) all topped Yaos previous record vote mark.
Its always an unbelievable honor, because theres so many great players in this league and so many young guys coming in, when you get named a starter from the fans, Wade said.
