When I was born, some people from Malaysia laughed at my parents for naming me ‘Omar Mukhtar’. According to them, it was a backdated name. They said, “You live in England, why would you give him a name like that?”. The funny thing is that living in England, none of the local people who lived here ever made fun of my name, even at school, students and teachers alike. My parents call me by my full name ‘Omar Mukhtar’, or ‘Mukhtar’ for short. I did choose to be called ‘Mukhtar’ at school too, because ‘Omar’ is also my father’s name and it could get confusing. Even though my friends and teachers found it hard in the beginning to pronounce the name ‘Mukhtar’, they didn’t choose to call me ‘Omar’ just because it was easier for them. They all respected my decision and tried their best to pronounce it. They never call me anything I didn’t want to be called.
I love how my parents named all three of us – Omar Mukhtar, Fatimah and Ali. They didn’t simply just say, “Ooh, ‘Omar Mukhtar’ sounds like a nice name, I’m going to call my son that” no, they named us after the owners of the names, hoping that one day, we might become as great a person as they are – Omar Mukhtar, after the famous Lion Of The Desert; Fatimah, after the beloved Prophet’s daughter; and Ali, after the 4th Caliph. Our parents always reminded us how important our names are and that we must live up to them. They also told us to be proud of our names and never be ashamed of them, even though some people say they are old-school.
Truthfully, I am proud to be named Omar Mukhtar and I respect my parents for naming me and my siblings with such great names - I owe it to them!
Happy Namesake Day,
Omar Mukhtar a.k.a. The Pawsome Lion

My dear Jai, now that you are gone, I can finally write this.
Thank you for looking after me for nearly 6 years. When I was working crazy hours, you were there to reheat food and soup for me. When I was sick, you got medicine and water for me. When I was single and lonely, we were baking all sorts of bread together just to kill time. When my pants needed sewing up, you always did it for me with my super short notice. I’m sorry for the times I was impatient when you nagged me to eat my food while it was hot. I know it was because you cared 😂
I will always remember how happy and appreciative you were when I bought you a birthday gift crying with tears of joy. I will always remember your positive attitude to life even though you had all sorts of negative things happening back home, how you always smile and say the loudest good morning to me. I will always remember how you hugged me every time after I had been away for work for a long time or when you were away and returning to Hong Kong. I will always remember how much you love to eat and how happy you were when you ate your favorite ice cream and dessert. I will always remember how well you cook and how much effort you put into presenting your food for me. I will always remember how you bake the best banana bread. I will always remember how you remember the brands of my clothes and shoes and where you put them away and try to pronounce them in your own funny way.
I will also remember how happy for me you were when I told you I had found someone, and when you started crying when I told you I was going to get married. Last few days you started crying again when u told me how much you were going to miss me and how I stopped you in time because I knew if you cried I would start crying too. I must admit I’m crying while I’m writing this 😢
But I am so happy for you that you can finally be with your daughters, your father and your husband. I wish you all the best and good health, I hope you can come back and visit us soon, otherwise I will go to Philippines to visit you.
Much love from M ❤️

How are sushi restaurants in Singapore and Japan different? I've created mini skits to demonstrate the differences starting from entering the restaurant and paying the bill. Just a short disclaimer, I have no intentions of making fun of different pronunciations of Japanese words. Heck, I myself pronounce a lot of English and Mandarin incorrectly too. But I do feel it sounds kind of cute.
The latter half of the skit is inspired by calvinandhabs. Check them out, they are hilarious.

What an absolute dream! I'm beyond words. Thank you all for this! I couldn't have gotten this without your support, encouragement and friendship. Apart from showing you the Silver Play Button, the rest of this video talks about the future of my channel, how to actually pronounce Botes, and answering your questions of "how can I join the polyglot community?".
Here's my last vlog from #PolyglotConference 2019 in Fukuoka, Japan. I gave my speech that day, but the full speech will be uploaded on the Polyglot Conference channel on YouTube later. Enjoy some snippets from the event! Btw, it seems lots of people are asking if they can join this event if they're not a polyglot - of course you can! The conference is open to anyone interested in languages. We're all still learning and it's a great way for us to get together and share our love of languages.

A question I get asked often - what steps to take when just starting with a language?
———
1. Start with the alphabet if the language has a new writing system. It’s extremely important to get the pronunciation right from the beginning so you don’t have to rely on often inaccurate English renditions of how to pronounce words. Once you have the writing system down, write as much as you can in the language without relying on English or another language to help too much.
2. After the alphabet, learn basic greetings and vocabulary. This is an important step and helps motivate you to keep going. I listen to the radio or to music from that language a lot, and if I learn the 100 most used words in the language, I’ll most likely hear that word in a song and get super excited about it.
3. Grammar. Learn a grammar structure, look at example sentences (either on apps like Duolingo, or textbooks, or sites that give example sentences like conjugator) and then replace words in the sentences with other words you know.
4. Practice. Getting a language partner is important. You should find someone who is open to correcting your mistakes, and someone who is patient to talk to you despite you being a beginner. I also practice by doing everything I normally do, in another language. My diary/schedule/shopping list/music playlist all transforms into my target language for a period of time.
5. Keep track of your progress. A diary, studygram or Youtube channel is a good way to see how you’ve progressed.
