สตีเวน สปีลเบิร์ก เกิดเมื่อปี 1946 ที่เมืองซินซินแนติ
รัฐโอไฮโอ ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ปัจจุบันอายุ 74 ปี
ในวัยเด็ก เขาไม่ใช่เด็กที่มีอะไรโดดเด่นมาก
มีผลการเรียนกลาง ๆ เหมือนเด็กคนอื่นทั่วไป
แต่มีสิ่งหนึ่งที่เขาหลงรักมาตั้งแต่เด็ก คือ “การสร้างภาพยนตร์”
เขาจึงได้เริ่มสร้างภาพยนตร์สั้น ๆ เองที่บ้าน ด้วยวัยเพียง 12 ปี
หลังจากนั้น โอกาสการกำกับหนังครั้งแรกในชีวิตของสตีเวน สปีลเบิร์ก ก็เกิดขึ้นในวัยเพียง 16 ปี
กับภาพยนตร์ที่มีชื่อเรื่องว่า Firelight
ภาพยนตร์ดังกล่าวได้เข้าฉายในโรงหนังท้องถิ่น โดยใช้ต้นทุนสร้าง 15,000 บาท และทำกำไรได้เพียงแค่ 30 บาท (อิงกับอัตราแลกเปลี่ยนในปัจจุบัน)
ด้วยผลการเรียนที่ไม่ได้โดดเด่น ทำให้เขาถูกปฏิเสธจากมหาวิทยาลัยในสาขาภาพยนตร์ถึง 2 ครั้ง
แต่ด้วยความไม่ยอมแพ้ทำให้เขาได้เข้าฝึกงานที่ Universal Studios แต่มีเงื่อนไขคือจะไม่ได้รับค่าจ้าง
แม้ว่าจะดูเป็นการเดินทางที่ไม่สวยหรู
แต่การเข้ามาฝึกงานของสตีเวน สปีลเบิร์ก ครั้งนี้
ก็ได้กลายมาเป็นก้าวสำคัญในชีวิตที่ทำให้เขาเริ่มเป็นที่รู้จัก
เพราะในปี 1974 สตีเวน สปีลเบิร์ก ได้มีโอกาสทำงานร่วมกับ จอห์น วิลเลียมส์ นักประพันธ์เพลงชื่อดัง
ในภาพยนตร์เรื่อง The Sugarland Express ที่มีทุนสร้างราว 90 ล้านบาท
แต่สามารถสร้างรายได้มากถึง 360 ล้านบาท
นอกจากผลตอบแทนที่ดีแล้ว ภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้ได้รับรางวัล Best Screenplay
ซึ่งทำให้เขาเริ่มเป็นที่รู้จักในวงการ
แต่เหตุการณ์ที่ทำให้ชื่อเสียงของ สตีเวน สปีลเบิร์ก เป็นที่รู้จักอย่างมาก
เกิดขึ้นในปี 1975 เขาได้มีโอกาสกำกับภาพยนตร์เรื่อง “Jaws” หนังสยองขวัญฉลามกินคน
ภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้ทำรายได้สูงถึง 14,000 ล้านบาท โดยมีต้นทุนในการสร้างเพียง 90 ล้านบาท
หลังจากนั้นมา เขาได้สร้างผลงานระดับโลกอีกมากมาย โดยมีผลงานที่เรารู้จักกันดีคือ
- Jurassic Park รายได้ 31,000 ล้านบาท ต้นทุน 1,890 ล้านบาท

และภาพยนตร์ชุด Indiana Jones ที่ร่วมสร้างกับทางจอร์จ ลูคัส ผู้สร้าง Star Wars
โดยที่จอร์จ ลูคัส เป็นคนเขียนเนื้อเรื่อง
สตีเวน สปีลเบิร์ก ทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้กำกับ
รวมผลงานร่วมกันทั้งหมด 4 ภาค กวาดรายได้ไปมากถึง 59,600 ล้านบาท

บริษัทแห่งแรกก็คือ “DreamWorks Pictures”
ในปี 1994 สตีเวน สปีลเบิร์ก กับ Jeffrey Katzenberg และ David Geffen
ได้ทำการก่อตั้ง DreamWorks Pictures ซึ่งเป็นบริษัท ผู้ผลิตแอนิเมชันและภาพยนตร์
โดยมีผลงานที่เรารู้จักกันดี เช่น Shrek, Madagascar และ How to Train Your Dragon
ด้วยผลงานที่โดดเด่น บริษัทสามารถสร้างรายได้ กว่า 3,000 ล้านบาทต่อปี
ในปี 2005 Viacom บริษัทคอนเทนต์ด้านความบันเทิงระดับโลก
ซึ่งเป็นบริษัทแม่ของ Paramount Pictures
ประกาศเข้าซื้อ DreamWorks เป็นมูลค่ากว่า 50,000 ล้านบาท
บริษัทถัดมาก็คือ “Amblin Partners”
เป็นอีกบริษัทที่ก่อตั้งโดย สตีเวน สปีลเบิร์ก
ซึ่งทำหน้าที่ผลิตภาพยนตร์ แอนิเมชัน ผ่านแบรนด์ต่าง ๆ
ซึ่งในช่วงแรกส่วนใหญ่เป็นบริษัทในเครือของเขาเอง เช่น Amblin Entertainment และ DreamWorks
แต่ต่อมาด้วยผลงานที่มีคุณภาพ ทำให้มีลูกค้าหลากหลายมากขึ้น

ล่าสุดได้ประกาศว่าจะร่วมงานกับทาง Netflix ในเรื่อง The Trial of the Chicago 7
ซึ่งคาดว่าจะเริ่มฉายในเดือนกันยายน 2021
นอกจากนี้เขายังมีรายได้อื่นอีก เช่น ส่วนแบ่ง 5% ของรายได้จากสวนสนุกจากการเป็นที่ปรึกษาให้ Universal Studios อีกด้วย
เรื่องราวทั้งหมดนี้ ก็ได้ทำให้สตีเวน สปีลเบิร์ก กลายมาเป็นหนึ่งในผู้กำกับภาพยนตร์
ที่มีทรัพย์สินมูลค่ามากที่สุดในโลก โดยปัจจุบันมีทรัพย์สินรวมกันกว่า 1.2 แสนล้านบาท
ทั้ง ๆ ที่ในอดีต โดนทั้งมหาวิทยาลัยปฏิเสธและต้องเข้าฝึกงานโดยที่ไม่ได้ผลตอบแทนอะไรเลย

ครั้งหนึ่ง จอร์จ ลูคัส เคยพนันกับ สตีเวน สปีลเบิร์ก ไว้ว่า “เขาจะให้ 2.5% จากรายได้ของ Star Wars ภาค 4 ชื่อภาค A New Hope หาก สตีเวน สปีลเบิร์ก ให้ 2.5% จากรายได้ของ Close Encounters ก่อนที่ภาพยนตร์ทั้ง 2 เรื่องจะฉาย”
จากเหตุการณ์ครั้งนั้น Star Wars ได้กลายมาเป็นภาพยนตร์ระดับโลก
จึงทำให้สตีเวน สปีลเบิร์ก ได้ส่วนแบ่ง 1,200 ล้านบาทจากการตกลงกันในครั้งนั้น
