"Why do migrant workers have to pay brokerage fees?"
Many of the tragic stories of #migrantworkers shared at a recent international workshop on fighting human trafficking were associated with exorbitant brokerage fees.
In a panel discussion, Klaus Vanhoutte, director of Payoke Shelter Center in Belgium, wondered why "the situation over here is completely upside down?"
"… We do have also recruitment agencies in Belgium, in western Europe, but over there it is absolutely illegal for a recruitment agency to ask for money from the person looking for the job. They are actually being paid by the ones looking for the workers," he said.
