Student Address, National Taiwan University Commencement 2021
International student Seth Austin Harding from Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering
.
最後,我想送給大家「功夫熊貓」裡的一句台詞: "You just need to believe"。

President, professors, and classmates, I'm very honored to be here. Thank you to NTU for giving me this opportunity. My name's Seth Austin Harding, and I'm from the D.C. metropolitan area. I'm going to tell a real story that's personal but that's relatable and what I see as the real me.
What motivated and guided me to take my undergraduate studies in Taiwan? When I was very young, I really loved watching kung fu movies, and when I was 10 years old, I went to the theater to watch "Kung Fu Panda". This became my favorite movie as I felt like the story of the main character Po was one to which I could very much relate. After watching this movie, I decided that I wanted to start learning kung fu, so I went to the United States Wushu Academy. At the time, I began hearing Mandarin on a daily basis, so when I was in high school, I decided to begin formally studying Chinese. It ended up being my Chinese teacher from Taipei who was my favorite teacher who taught my favorite class, so I decided I'd hang out in the Chinese classroom every day and practice lots. By the time graduation came around, I had attained the highest proficiency in Chinese among any non-native speaker in my school. My second favorite class was computer science, and I ended up attaining among the best coding skills in my school. After getting accepted to the school of my dreams -- National Taiwan University -- I felt honored, humbled, and excited; I could now spend time at among the world's finest universities studying Chinese and at the same time advancing my knowledge of computer science.
But when I look back at my freshman year, to be honest with you, I didn't know what I was doing. Despite having taken very many Chinese classes, when I went to the NTU lectures, I understood only about half of what the teachers were saying. Contrary to most people's impressions of an American, I was actually too shy to raise my hand, to ask questions, or to even meet with teachers after class, so I had very few friends at the time. I started to become homesick and depressed. At that time, I found that basketball was the only way I knew of relieving my stress. However, while playing basketball, I had torn my ACL and it would take two surgeries and a year and a half in time to fully recover. At this point, I felt caught between a rock and a hard place. In fact, this was the lowest point of my life, and I didn't know what to do. I felt like my Chinese wasn't good enough, I had been diagnosed with insomnia and ADHD, and I felt like the math taught in America was too simple to allow for me to keep up with my classmates. I was under immense pressure, and at this time, I lost any sense of purpose or direction. Later on, I went to seek help from NTU counseling, from my psychiatrist, and from my department. I reached out to Professor Winston Hsu from CSIE, and he told me this: "Never give up"; it was such an oversimplified way to approach such a complex series of problems, I had thought. However, I pondered these words intensely for one week, and by the end of that week, I had made a firm decision. This would NOT be another example of me giving up. I decided to go all out, to work diligently and passionately on all tasks at hand. This was the turning point of my life; I started to discipline myself to a very high degree. At this time, I met my then-to-become advisors Professor Shih-Wei Liao and Professor Shih-Hao Hung and entered their labs to begin research. Finally, the passion that I had for computer science that I had previously held in high school was kindled again, and I was finally reminded why I loved this field. I began my research life in blockchain and AI, and at the time I entered the lab, I also began creating NTUAI. NTUAI is now a large and highly successful NTU club that is dedicated to the research and public understanding of AI. Welcome one and all to join us; please scan our QR code here.
For a year and a half I haven't returned to America because of covid. But not to worry; I have found my second home, away from home. I love it here in NTU and I cherish all of the things I've had the privilege to experience in Taiwan. I've gone through the most difficult of struggles in my life here, but I've also had the most fortunate and blessed of experiences. To conclude, I'd like to quote a line from "Kung Fu Panda": "You just need to believe". As long as you are willing to adopt an optimistic attitude in facing challenges and hardships, you may become a positive force in changing the lives of those around you as well as your own life. It all depends on how you view it; just like what Po's father says, "there is no secret ingredient. It's just you." Thank you, everyone.

靈感
Tip No. 41: You know those quirky little things you do and think? Collect them in a file or on paper. Even if you’re a storyteller, you can use these as details to add depth and distinction to your jokes.
GARY'S FAVORITES

Tip No. 45: Don’t Hoard Jokes
Don’t worry about “burning” material on a special or album. Hoarding jokes may signal to your brain that you’re out of ideas. “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” — Maya Angelou.
Gary’s thoughts on Tip No. 45: This attitude has been crucial to an unprecedented streak of creativity over the last two years. I’ve written four hours of material, which is almost as much as I wrote in my first 23 years of comedy. Most important has been my health, this idea may be second.
Tip No. 62: Look for inspiration everywhere. Paintings, music, poetry, rap, novels, nonfiction, short stories, theater, philosophy, etc. can all provide a spark for creativity. Cross-pollinate your work with broad influences and watch your creativity grow.
Tip No. 63: Write it all down while the coffee is still telling you you’re mighty. Reread after you’ve turned back into Dr. Banner (yes he’s a genius, but not as self-confident in that condition). That buzz is so valuable but needs editing.
GARY'S FAVORITES
Gary(原作者)的最愛
Tip No. 90: After a Good Set, Brainstorm
You just had a great set. Instead of celebrating, use that hour or so after when the synapses are still firing and your confidence is soaring to voice record or write down the ideas that pop up during that especially fertile creative time.
Gary’s thoughts on Tip No. 90: Huge help in making jokes that work longer and coming up with tangents and inspired ideas.
Tip No. 92: Notice where you do your best thinking. The shower? Running? Listening to music? Not listening to music? Driving? Walking? Make sure to put yourself in the places where you’re doing your best thinking as frequently as possible.
Tip No. 132: I think you can limit frustration and discouragement by writing just a page on a new premise before trying it out onstage. See if there’s anything there before you spend a day on a new joke. But if you’re truly excited by the new idea, keep going!
Tip No. 143: Listen to strangers’ conversations. (I tell myself it’s not impolite if they’re being super-loud.) I got “How Dottie is that?” when a supercilious woman named Jodi bragged “How Jodi is that?” “So Jodi,” her friend replied.
我有一次聽到一個名叫Jodi的膚淺女人吹噓"How Jodi is that?",她朋友回覆:"So Jodi",我因此想出了我的 “How Dottie is that?”
Tip No. 157: Need new joke ideas? Be sensitive. If you’re uncomfortable with that word, use “irritable” (or grow up). A lot of good comedy comes from reaction to injustice or discomfort large and small, which requires being hypersensitive to those feelings.
Tip No. 217: “All art is autobiographical. The pearl is the oyster’s autobiography.” — Federico Fellini. Purposefully mine your personal history for your act. Your life is a wellspring. Dig deep.
Federico Fellini
Tip No. 241: Many of your favorite writers include the same themes/subjects/objects/interests repeatedly in their work. Don’t be afraid to return again and again to your passions and obsessions to explore and expound.
Tip No. 285: Explore unusual angles in a joke. Example: Examine things from the POV of a child or an Expert. My man Jimmy P and I still laugh over his “Martian response to high school football practice: Why are the hard-heads (players) taking orders from the small soft-heads (coach)?”
Tip No. 297: One of the miracles of comedy is that you can get redemption for suffering, small and large, by making something funny with it. When you are ready, try to write something funny about your mistakes, setbacks, or even tragedies.
Tip No. 298: Skim your life for the unusual events and activities that you can’t believe you were a part of or that people can’t believe you were a part of. Then write about it! Back row No. 93 MULLET:
Tip No. 310: When it comes to solving the puzzles that are our jokes, draw on every area of knowledge, expertise, and talent. It’s so gratifying to use a fact, a lesson, or a memory from elementary school, high school, or elsewhere to fill in the joke.
Tip No. 311: Some of your best ideas will come to you in the shower. There’s science behind why it happens. Get a shower notepad if you have trouble remembering your ideas. Don’t listen to music. Listen to your thoughts. Ruminate on tonight’s set or a new joke.
Tip No. 313: Try teaching or informing the audience about something through some of your jokes. We love to learn while being entertained and vice versa. You have knowledge? Put it in your act! Just make sure it’s funny.
Tip No. 327: Going home for Thanksgiving? Take copious notes! Your family is unique. Being reminded of the dynamics and adding new memories will be great resources for your act. “Family isn’t a word. It’s a sentence.”
Tip No. 331: There are great stories from our lives that we’re not able to translate into stand-up. Don’t throw them out. Collect those stories in a file for radio and TV and other interview situations.
Tip No. 340: Volunteer! Especially if you don’t have a day job. There are so many opportunities to help. You will do good and have something new to write about. In NYC we have New York Cares. One year we decorated an elementary school for Halloween.
Tip No. 358: I have recently started audio recording all notes sessions (for projects), and next time I pitch jokes with a friend I will record that too. It’s very helpful. You will be surprised at what you forgot when you listen back. Ask permission first.
Tip No. 360: Spending holidays with kids? Pay attention to them. Listen to them. Take note and embrace their curiosity and enthusiasm within your writing. (Also avoid the “kids these days” writing. It’s lazy.) Merry Christmas from your second favorite long-haired Jew.

//背景
(愛因斯坦給朋友的書信) "It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it."
(另一封愛因斯坦的信) "The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this." "For me the Jewish religion like all others is an incarnation of the most childish superstitions"
("Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.")

I kept asking you why did you go through all this today and invited me to a candlelit dinner at the restaurant?
You won’t tell me why.
Now we’re done dinner. Can you please tell me why?
What do you mean by that?
What do you mean? You’re leaving me?
Wait, is it because of what happened between 麗玲and I that night?
You’re still mad at me? And you won’t forgive me?
No, please don’t think like that.
I don’t feel forced at all.
I’m sorry.
Because I wouldn’t believe that 麗玲’s body is possessed by your spirit.
But now I’m so sure that you’re my 妍熙 baby.
So I don’t care if you’re in 麗玲’s body or somebody else’s body.
I don’t care if you’re tall short fat skinny
Round or flat , old or young
只要你是我的妍熙寶貝 as long as you’re my 妍熙寶貝
I love you just the same.
So I hope you can give me a chance so I can prove to you. I will show you by actions that I’ve completely accepted you and I love you very much.
As long as you don’t leave me.
Of course it’s true.
As long as you stay with me and don’t ever leave me
Even if you need to use 麗玲’s body to live with me forever
I’m willing to do that.
if you don’t believe me I can propose to you right now.
Even though we’re already married
But if you want to
I can propose to you again.
I can to propose to you ten times, a hundred times a thousand times. I’m willing to do that.
Even if you need to use 麗玲’s body to live with me forever,
as long as you stay with me and don’t leave me, that’s enough for me.
I believe no one is ever going to tear us apart anymore.
Will you accept my proposal?

I've been waiting too long
I cannot just let you go
Baby I’m sorry I’m so lonely
we all choose the right way
it’s so hard to find the reason
Baby I’m sorry I’m so lonely
hey darling
just tell me the reason
suddenly why you stop falling for me
it hurts when you leave
heard enough sorry
was it because i cannot show you all i’ve promised
my heart is bleeding
oh please
求你了
just give me one chance
to make you understand
i love you the most
all the bad things that make you despair
i’m taking control
i won’t let you down this time
everything will be different
baby kiss me one more time when i’m alone
you know that just like what you used to do before
baby send me you location
don’t leave me with no reason
Baby I’m sorry I’m so lonely
Baby I’m sorry I’m so lonely
Baby I’m sorry I’m so lonely
Baby I’m sorry I’m so lonely
you told me to find another lover
you know i can’t
cause you have lived deep in my blood
want to calm down
try my best to turn my body around
but till this moment i don’t know
why i just can’t move on
we’re getting older forward
gradually learn a lot
i will be sober
i believe i can shake it off
look for my future
i’ve got my own world
may be your departure
give me the power
but i still love ya
Baby I’m sorry I’m so lonely
Baby I’m sorry I’m so lonely

i believe in you沒有什麼原因 在 Claudia Koh Youtube 的最佳貼文
Recently, I’ve heard a story that made me realized there are countless injustices happening around us at all times. If the one that has been done wrong happens to be your friend, what can you do?
This story breaks my heart. The only thing I could do is to motivate her to keep going. I believe there is nothing in life we can’t bear with hope in our hearts. So don’t give up, hold on and shed a tear...?

Lyrics (with Chinese translation):
你會想
You must think
Why’s that I don’t cry?
We’re all waiting
While others bawled out
Tears in their eyes
No it’s not your fault
Neither is his lost
But he fled, why has he left?
Why did I even try?
I don’t deserve what was mine
Still believe we could fly
You won’t forget that
Time you bleed
Scars on your heart let
Time to heal
但
Realize
There is nothing in life can’t bear
Hold on
Shed a tear
Part of me can’t deny
I have a killed another life
Nothing remains in this broken world
How can he do this to her?
I can’t forgive what I’ve heard
Is it wrong I want him in hell?
Don’t look back
Can’t love again
There’s no plan
And what’s fair?
Anyone care?
Where is justice that I can express?
Can I feel my own heart beat
Once again?
Where’s love that can last
Until the end?
Don’t give up
There’s so much more you can look forward to
Hold on
You’re not alone
You won’t forget that
Time you bleed
Scars on your heart let
Time to heal
但
Realize
There is nothing in life can’t bear
Hold on
Shed a tear
Now you go
Look up the sky
Go forth and fly
Forgive the lies
Peace in heaven
