Behind the scenes, 15 minutes before the show!
I get asked about this a lot, so I’m posting this here 😊
—-
I’m normally chill (and cheerful) before shows, but I get STRESSED when I’m pressed for time. We had our only full run from 4-6pm (fair enough) so I barely had two hours to get everything else sorted before the show. Having done vocal rest from 6-7:45pm, I now had 15 minutes to warm my chords up again— my check up songs were the first two (“I Could Have Danced” and “Think of Me.”)
So between getting the shoes to fit properly, ensuring that the team set up the right gowns for costume changes, and prepping myself mentally for the gazillion lyrics I had crammed in the last few weeks, this was me not even realising what else was happening around me.
Thank you, Nisham for being so meticulous about creases and lint in the gown, and to Gloomy for running after me with a bronzer. They know I’m a generally pleasant person— just not during those 15 minutes. Hahaha.

It is just after 2 p.m. when Wright realizes he is late to a piano lesson. Wright's student, Wan-ching Li, is preparing for an important recital, and today's session will be used to polish her technique.
Wright swoops into the classroom, says a quick "hello," then stops short -- and plops onto the floor. From there, he cranes his neck, and peers up at the belly of a baby grand.
The piano is brand-new and has been equipped with a small box with ports for cables: a MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), standard equipment in the music profession, used to transfer sound data from musical instruments to computers. Wright grins like a boy with a new train: "This is cool."
Li is warming up, her fingers lightly touching the keys as she plays scales, then chords. As have most Peabody students, she has been involved with music nearly all her life: She began piano lessons at age 3, studied organ and composition in college, then worked as a production assistant at a recording company. Now 29, Li has come to Baltimore from Taipei, Taiwan, because she wants to create art that combines music and technology.
She begins playing "Caution to the Wind," a piece written in 1987 by James Mobberley for piano and tape-recorded accompaniment. The composition is delightful and raucous; at one point, Li karate chops the piano and, at another, she slams the keyboard cover.
The piece also demands machine-like precision.
Each stroke of Li's fingers must coincide perfectly with the music made by her inanimate partner, which plays on no matter what. "It is really hard to synchronize with the tape," she says later. "I have to put a stopwatch on top of the piano and watch it as I count seconds to make sure I am completely accurate. It doesn't allow me much freedom."
But at the recital, Li will play a second piece that illustrates what she and others mean when they talk about increasingly responsive interactions between man and computer.
The composition is called "Duet for 1 Pianist," and was written by Jean-Claude Risset for piano -- and computer. Playing duets with a computer is different from being accompanied by a tape
recorder. Information about each piano key Li touches, and the force with which it is struck, is transmitted by the MIDI to a computer. Based upon how and what Li plays, the computer decides which notes to play and how and when to play them. "With a computer, I can play in real time. I don't need to follow a recording."
She plays: Her small hands flying up and down the keyboard, her notes by turns full and rich, light and clear. The computer plays: Its synthesizer producing crescendos and trills that complement her music.

Did you know: to be a successful speaker/ emcee/ presenter/ host, what GOES into your BODY before starting your job will impact your performance just as much?
Learn from my experiences, you don't want this:
1. Tummy growling through the mic in front of 1600 people because yours truly forgot to eat between rehearsals/ makeup/ 6 hour event
2. Parched throat and talking like a CHIPMUNK due to too much caffeine
To make sure you are performing at your optimum level as an emcee (after all, client's pay top dollar for you to REPRESENT them, so your job is to project professionalism, on top of flair, charm, a bit of cheekiness (if requested)
.
SO, Foods to AVOID:
1. Dairy, cheese, processed sugar - produces phlegm and the urge to clear throat EVERY 5 secs
2. Caffeine and Caffeinated tea - diuretic and dehydrating, nuff said! It also stresses your vocal chords
3. Spicy and Fried Foods - phlegm and heartburn
4. carbonated drinks - not only are they sugary, them bubbles surfacing at the worst times ... you can imagine *burp*
.
Foods you SHOULD eat:
1. Fresh Fruits (-banamas are a great energy source) - good sugar/ energy
2. Chicken/ Fish - lean meat that gives you energy to last longer
3. room temp water
4. honey - self explanatory
.
READY? Now go ROCK that stage with your most AWESOME voice!
If this helped you, feel free to share

Ed Sheeran《Photograph》小提琴版本 | Violin cover by Lin Tzu An of Photograph by Ed Sheeran

The warm melody and chords of Photograph describe love, which can hurt sometimes but love can heal us too. Love is not only for lovers/couples, but between family members, and between friends, so let's keep the love and our memories in the photos.
Keeping our love and memories in the photos so you can keep me inside the pocket of your ripped jeans. If the photos can carry n load all the love we have and have all the beautiful moments on pieces of thin photographic printing papers (it is still really romantic to develop the photographs from the film), as you put my photos in your pocket, just like having everything of me, including past and present and all my love.
Whatever heartbreaking moments we may have, we are still allowed to stay close to each other and look at the other's eyes via photographs.
Even we are far from each other physically or geographically, love inside us would just fit me into your heartbeats because of the photographs😉

Here is my most recent English translation, a song called "Chouchou Musubi" (Butterfly Bow) by Aimer, a Japanese singer-songwriter who has recently become popular.
This is by request, and also a song that I wanted to try. It was quite a challenge to translate into English because the lyrics include specific instructions and I had to keep them in tact, so I had to be as literal as possible. It took several tries to get this right, but I am quite proud of the finished product, so I hope you enjoy it!
Incidentally, "chouchou musubi" is technically the word for "bow," but it literally means "butterfly bow," and I used the word "butterfly" throughout the song to refer to the bow. There is a completely different knot called a "butterfly knot" in English :)
Video location: Shiroyama Park in Matsuyama City, Ehima Prefecture, Japan

歌詞/LYRICS
~♪~♪~♪~♪~♪~
You first make a circle with the right side
And hold it snug and sound
Then you bring the left side behind the circle you made
And you loop it right around
And then you put it through the pocket that opens up
Between and wait until you see
Until you see it coming out, then you meet it halfway
And pull on one, two, three
On the very first go-round
Well, even if it comes out uneven
Put your strength into it once again, try again
I'll teach you how to tie, to tie a perfect butterfly
Pull it out until the wings are wide
And make the knot extra tight
Keep your arms here where they lay
And keep your memories far away
Always there in the back of your mind for someday
Now see, if you pull on just either side
The knot will surely break
For some things are just so much easier to tear apart
Than they are to create
But even when you untie your bow
Yes, take it slow, unlace it carefully
I know that it's dull, but come on, now and pull
On the count of one, two, three
There are times you pull too hard
As you pray that the knot you've tied won't come loose
The wings come out too wide and you don’t know
Know what to do
I'll teach you how to tie, to tie a perfect butterfly
Pull it out until the wings are wide
And make the knot extra tight
Keep your dreams here by your side
And let your memories soar up high
'Cause the ones that return
When you need them are the best kind
So don't stand in silence as you pull your side
Don't make an uneven butterfly
You'll end up loosening the string that you planned to tie
Or further tightening the knot you wanted to unwind
From all the threads in the world, too many to count
Infinite paths on this big, blue earth spread about
The two of us came from the ends of two separate roads
And found each other on the end of the threads that we chose
It wasn't chance that brought us here, it was all you and me
We took a side each and we pulled on the count of three
We put our strength into it so it wouldn't turn out
Too narrow or wide, wouldn't be too loose or too tight
kono aokute hiroi sekai ni
musuu ni chirabatta naka kara
betsu-betsu ni futari eranda ito wo
otagai taguri yose-atta n' da

Practise/Theory Note, JTC Says:
Continuing with Theme B, we still have a mixture of tonalities. For the F#m we can stick with A major (A B C# D E F# G#), once again returning to F Lydian for the Fmaj7. Jack sticks to this scale for the G chord, and then plays a bluesy A minor pentatonic (A C D E G) lick over the D.
