The Game of Our Lives: The Meaning and Making of English Football
(David Goldblatt)
(To see a World in a Grain of Sand. And a Heaven in a Wild Flower.)

The Game of Our Lives: The Meaning and Making of English Football by David Goldblatt
The quote “To see a world in a grain of sand and a heaven in a wild flower” from English poet William Blake muses about getting an understanding of the larger condition by observing small things, and in the same way the English football can be said to reflect the development of British society. Sports writer David Goldblatt tells how the national sport mirrors the state of affairs in post-Thatcher Britain in The Game of Our Lives: The Meaning and Making of English Football.
The book of over 400 pages covers the British economy, city identity, nationality, unification and independence, along with governance and gender, with Goldblatt’s observations demonstrating his familiarity with football trends and British society. At one point he compares the ineffectiveness of the British government with the mismanagement in the English Football Association that has produced poor performances by the England national team in recent years. His criticisms echo a Chinese saying: love well, chide well.
As the book was published in early 2015, football fans will find the book even more illuminating if they look back on major happenings in the English football world over the last two years such as Leicester City’s shock Premier League win that surprised many. With Britain about to hold a general election and Brexit looking inevitable, The Game of Our Lives: The Meaning and Making of English Football may give readers food for thought.
About the writer: Uncle Shrimp loves reading, writing and athletics and hopes he can continue exploring the world through sports.

Late-Night City Dwellers (English version below)

The times today has changed. The bustling city night life with neon lights in a riot of colours, and the rich variety of entertainment options have many people, who are unwilling to stay lonesome, often singing "I am not coming home tonight". Therefore, regardless if they work in the night shift or regular hours, more and more people are becoming late-night city dwellers. The occasional dinner gatherings with some good friends to catch up are inevitable. But if one can make use of such opportunities to pay some attention to the social problems, and team up to do charity together, such gatherings will take on a deeper meaning.
We all know that some occupations requires getting off work late. Such professions are in the industries of service, medical care, food and beverage, etc. I hope the late-night city dwellers working in the service industry, especially those in the hotel and night entertainment establishments, will have the affinity to read this article and extract the "elixir" from within to protect yourselves and your families. We are all Yang beings. What we breathe in and consume should primarily be Yang in nature. This is an indisputable fact. Let's talk about breathing in air of Yang nature, what exactly is that? In ancient times, people started their day as the sun rises, and rest upon sunset. This is the natural order of life and way to absorb Yang air and energy.
Late-night city dwellers are virtually not able to breath or absorb air of Yang nature. If your own birth chart does not exhibit sufficient Yang nature, or if you do not consume enough food of Yang nature, you are bound to suffer from two common ailments i.e. cold and flu, as well as migraine. There are actually more ailments which I do not intend to divulge as I think the above 2 illnesses are already quite tortuous for you. Ha ha ha!
All these ailments are a direct result of absorbing excessive Yin energy. I have one good way of absorbing Yang energy and resisting the Yin for your consideration. Find out your favorable element(s) from your birth chart, and get a string of chanting beads made of material of your favorable element, to wear on your wrist. Please pay attention to this: chanting beads are named as such because they are meant for you to recite the Buddha Name and chant the mantras daily. If you fail to do that, you shall continue to be a late-night city dweller, burdened with Yin energy.

From the Day I Received the Light of Virtue (English version below)
--------------
25 years ago, there was a young Buddhist lay practitioner who would happily share the Dharma with me almost every time he saw me. Although he was a lay practitioner, in my eyes, he was like a little novice monk. He was kind and did not mind my insolence, and willingly shared the Dharma to deliver the wayward youth in me. Ha! We have since lost touch with each other for many years, and I sincerely send him my best wishes that he is still basking in the light of the Buddha, that all his virtuous deeds will come to fruition, and that he will attain total clarity of his mind and revelation of Buddha nature.
The above paragraph illustrated, in a small part, my initial contact with the Dharma. I started my formal practice of the Dharma, and that would mean taking refuge, on the 15th Day of the 8th Lunar Month (Mid Autumn Festival). As the saying goes, "The moon on Mid Autumn is especially clear and pristine, eating moon cakes and appreciating the full moon bring wondrous delights in life." Another one goes, "The longing of our kins exacerbates during the festive season". The kinship that I mentioned refer to the common Origin of you and me. For those of you who understand my meaning, we indeed walk the same path! I did not originally intend to take refuge in the Triple Gems on this day of the Full Moon. The past two tries ended up in failure. Only upon the third attempt was I successful, and that day coincided with the Mid Autumn Festival. This seems to signify that my pursuits of Enlightenment, deliverance of the sentient beings, benefiting both self and others, both the living and the dead, shall come to perfect fruition.
Before I learnt the Dharma, I always thought that what I did at home, in school or in my job were of virtuous in nature. Only after I have taken refuge and started learning the Dharma did the awakening occurred. I realised that my previous notions of kindness and virtues were not authentic. Being truly virtuous or kind means not being calculative nor expectant. It involves upholding of precepts and the act of repentance. It teaches us to remember and to repay kindness bestowed upon us. It promotes diligence in cultivating the Three Endeavours (Discipline, Meditation, Wisdom) and douses the fire of Greed, Hatred and Ignorance. It advocates gratitude towards all we have in life. This wisdom was bestowed upon me from the day I received the virtuous light and actualized my Dharma practice and spiritual cultivation diligently. Some of you may ask, "Is it not enough to just be happy during our lifetime?". It is inevitable for one to crave for happiness, but without spiritual cultivation, our quest for happiness will breed more misdeeds that will eventually lead us down the path of endless sufferings in Samsara. This is not wisdom, but ignorance.
Master Dai Hu sincerely looks forward to the day when you receive the light of virtue into your life, enter into an eternal state of light and bliss, and bid farewell to all sufferings.
My gratitude to all.
