Time for Taiwan 2015-2016, Episode 20: Toucheng by Train
Transcript
Today we’re going to Wushi Port in Yilan where there’s a fantastic museum, seafood and a beach that surfers love.
I'm Michella. I grew up in the Silicon Valley and was a journalist in Taiwan for ten years. I like to try new things, play with new toys, and visit old places in a new way. I’m going to show you around the Taiwan that I know. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.
To get to Wushi Port, take a train and get off at Toucheng. You can pay for your tickets by tagging on and off with an Easycard or iPass.
This is Toucheng Station. Toucheng literally means “first city.” Between here and Taipei lies that, the Hsuehshan Mountain Range. This was the first city that was developed on this side of those mountains.
This is Wushi Port, the latest reincarnation of it, actually. The older and much smaller one is over there. Come on, I want to show you.
Wushi by the way means “black rock.” Those dark rocks in the middle of the old port over there is how this area got its name. And the funky looking building behind me, that’s the Lanyang Museum.
The outline itself is really interesting. What do you think it looks like? A crashed spaceship? A mountain growing out of the ground? The architect, Kris Yao, wanted it to resemble the natural landscape around here - rocks that that jut diagonally out of the earth and the ocean.
The shape of the building and the big pool of water in front of it makes a really good picture. Looking at the building makes me feel like I’m hearing music. No, I’m not crazy. I love it!
Kris Yao used 12 different materials for the facades. Each material represents one specific musical note. He mapped the score of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” to the facades of this building. I think it’s quite clever! And I love the space!
The exhibits here are nicely presented too. In the main hall, you’ll learn about flora and fauna found in Yilan.
This is the scaly anteater. It has special meaning to me because my university’s mascot is the anteater! Zot zot.
There are displays on nature, culture, everyday life and lots of other things, like the farming and fishing industries.
This is a real fishing boat! A lot of the exhibits in this museum are interactive and that’s why I love it. Of course everything is really well laid out, too. There’s so much to learn if you slow down, look and think about what you’re looking at. Unfortunately, there’s just not enough time in one day, so I have to come back!
Where can you eat if you’re hungry? There’s a seafood market here.
There’s fresh and processed seafood here. If you want, you can buy it fresh down here and go upstairs to the restaurant area and have it cooked for you. Of course if you would rather not personally give something, that’s still breathing, the death sentence, have the restaurant take care of everything - just go upstairs and order there, or to any of the other restaurants in the area.
This is tuna floss with chunks of tuna in it. It’s good for diabetics or for people who don't like sweet foods. No sugar added in here. Mm. I like!
Japanese people fresh fish raw. The Chinese like to steam it. Tasty steamed fish have to be really, really fresh.
Wushi Port is also a big surfing spot. A lot of surfers in northern Taiwan like to come here. In fact, we bumped into one of our coworkers over there. I love it how there’s so much to do around here - there’s the beach, the museum, seafood, hiking, whale watching from Spring to Fall. Everything’s within walking distance, too. You should come!

Michella's notes
We’ve been by Lanyang Museum quite a few times now, and this was the first time we actually got to go inside. It is a wonderful museum! The space is really beautiful (but if you want to enjoy it in peace, go right when they open). I really liked the displays and how they are from floor to ceiling, covering many different levels and aspects of life in Yilan, but they’re really easy to miss if you don’t know what you’re looking at and if no one is there to tell you the stories. There are audio and guided tours in English and Mandarin, I highly recommend them.
The seafood market is kind of fun to walk through. There are two stands that sell fresh seafood, all the other ones sell processed seafood and most allow you to taste before you buy, which is fun and nice. There are several restaurants upstairs that sell and cook fresh seafood, but the one we went to is diagonally across the street from the seafood market building. The name of the place is 章魚哥 Mr Octopus (or brother octopus) and I liked how it seemed cleaner than the restaurants in the market. The food there is quite good!
If the weather’s nice, you can take a walk on the beach. If you’re a surfer, you might really like it there. If you’re here during the right season, you can even go out to Turtle Island or go whale watching. Toucheng is a tiny town, but Wushi Port has a pretty big place in my heart.
You should come!

About The Performers/
Betty Apple
Betty Apple is a composer, DJ, and sound and performance artist. Apple has made an impact in Taipei with visceral noise/performance art pieces using synthesizers, field recordings and amplified vibrators. In 2013, Apple was the artist in residence at Lacking Sound Festival. In addition to her own performances, she curated a series of events exploring notions of sound in relation to femininity. Apple is at the forefront of a new wave of Taiwanese artists who are beginning to fuse their work with political activism. The anti-nuclear movement has grown exponentially in Taiwan over the past few years, in particular, since the meltdown at Fukushima, and Apple is among those who have organized events and produced music to support it.

Goodbye! Nao! needs no introduction. This band can be dissected and understood in many ways because how and what they play can’t be categorized. The only thing they anticipate is the energy and creativity they bring to the audience during performance.

Physical Chemical Brother
Physical Chemical Brother sampling 8 bit sounds and graphic from Nintendo games, creating tracks who's style ranges from Electronic, Techno, DNB to Dubstep. Then places the mix on the dancefloor
where it becomes not just indie music but electro indie.

Three aboriginal Taiwanese youths from Taitung jam together in the big city, united by their shared love of modern and avant-garde music.
Once lost in the value of life under influence of environment and being in a part of aboriginal groups, he’s finally found his identity in his culture through music and hoping to make an impact with his emotions through music.
Firm drums, bouncing bass and psychedelic guitar sound as if a little boy running and screaming in a creepy, foggy woods. This is a band blending traditional aboriginal Taiwanese tunes with experimental noises.

Vice City
Vice City
Vice City loves music that has broad sense of time and space, and rich physical sense that can bring liberation and magical energy of awareness that often comes with meditation or yoga. Any elements that seem conflicted such as natural sounds, traditional tribal music instruments and singing and modern industrial city are her sources of inspiration.

VJ Carl Westman
Long term resident of Taiwan, South African artist Carl Westman's type of creation includes painting, graphic design, VJ, electronic music and noise. Similar to his visual work by overlapping geometric shapes and colors, his music is both complex and simple in a deep and dark psychedelic atmosphere, reflecting his exploration in the meaning of life and universe.

Goodbye! Nao! needs no introduction.

Vice City

Omikuji(Japanese style paper fortune) Fishing 'Tai mikuji'. Tai is red snapper in Japanese, and the name of tai suggests the term 'medetai' meaning happy. So the 'tai mikuji' is a kind of paronomasia. I filmed it at Yasaka Jinja Shrine, Kyoto. 500yen(4.5USD)/try

Takoyaki (たこ焼き or 蛸焼?) is a ball-shaped Japanese snack made of a wheat flour-based batter and cooked in a special moulded pan. It is typically filled with minced or diced octopus (tako), tempura scraps (tenkasu), pickled ginger, and green onion. Takoyaki are brushed with takoyaki sauce (similar to Worcestershire sauce) and mayonnaise, and then sprinkled with green laver (aonori) and shavings of dried bonito. There are many variations to the takoyaki recipe, for example, ponzu (soy sauce with dashi and citrus vinegar), goma-dare (sesame-and-vinegar sauce) or vinegared dashi.
Takoyaki was first popularized in Osaka, where a street vendor named Tomekichi Endo is credited with its invention in 1935. Takoyaki was inspired by akashiyaki, a small round dumpling from the city of Akashi in Hyōgo Prefecture made of an egg-rich batter and octopus. Takoyaki was initially popular in the Kansai region, and later spread to the Kantō region and other areas of Japan. Takoyaki is associated with yatai street food stalls, and there are many well-established takoyaki specialty restaurants, particularly in the Kansai region. Takoyaki is now sold at commercial outlets, such as supermarkets and 24-hour convenience stores.
Yaki is derived from "yaku" (焼く) which is one of the cooking methods in Japanese cuisine, meaning "to fry or grill", and can be found in the names of other Japanese cuisine items such as teppanyaki, yakitori, teriyaki, okonomiyaki and sukiyaki.

10 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT RAMUNE ラムネ (JAPANESE MARBLE SODA)
Ramune is a popular carbonated soft drink from Japan - one of the modern symbols of the Japanese summer.
Some people call it the most complicated soft drink in the world, but it’s really quite simple. The drink is pressure sealed with a marble from the inside, and you have this 'pushy device' that you push inside the neck to dislodge the marble.
1) RAMUNE WAS INVENTED BY A SCOT
In 1884 during the Meiji period, this Scottish dude, Alexander Cameron Sim, had his own Pharmaceutical company in Kobe. Apparently it was a trend amongst pharmacists to invent their own drink concoctions. Some were hits, some were misses. Sim's drink - named Mabu soda at the time, mabu meaning marble - was a massive hit. Eventually the name was changed to Ramune and the drink was sold nationwide. Ramune is an epic Japanese drink, so it’s no surprise Sim has his very own monument in Kobe.
2) RAMUNE WAS JAPAN'S FIRST EVER SOFT DRINK
We’re talking about the first mainstream commercialised soft drink in Japan. It wasn’t Coke. It wasn’t Ginger Ale. It was Ramune.
3) RAMUNE IS HEALTHIER THAN COKE
One reason Ramune has been growing in popularity is cause of the lower calorie and carbohydrate count. Although these levels can differ depending on the Ramune flavour. People trying to lose weight sometimes drink Ramune as a substitute for Coke or for any other regular soft drink.
4) PEOPLE INITIALLY THOUGHT RAMUNE DRINKS WERE BOMBS
Back in the 1850s, Matthew C. Perry, a Commodore of the United States Navy (who played a leading role in the opening of Japan to the West), brought carbonated sodas over to Japan. Perry and co. presented these special beverages as gifts.
A Johnny Knoxville type crew member thought it would be a funny idea to shake up some of the fizzy sodas before offering them to the Japanese. After it exploded in their faces, many thought they were bombs! It almost started a war.
Later on, when commercial Ramune was released to the public, many people were suspicious of this foreign mystery drink that may or may not explode in your face like a bomb. Not to mention carbonation was unheard of.
5) RAMUNE USED TO BE UNPOPULAR
It wasn’t called Ramune at the beginning. It was called ‘Remon Sui’ which directly translates to lemon water.
Eventually the name was changed to Remoneedo, which is the straight Japanese pronunciation of the word ‘lemonade’. And later on shortened to just Ramune. The drink then became a massive hit.
6) RAMUNE WAS ORIGINALLY MARKETED AS A PREVENTION FOR CHOLERA
This is bullcrap, but along with the Ramune name change, this bit of false marketing helped its popularity.
7) THERE ARE OVER 36 FLAVOURS OF RAMUNE
Ramune is super popular, but after the influx of newer soft drinks into the marketplace, like Coke, Fanta, Sprite, etc; the Ramune higher ups felt they needed to spice things up.
There are fruit flavours like banana, blueberry, grape, orange, green apple, kiwi, peach, pineapple, plum, cherry, coconut, mango, melon, pomelo, watermelon, raspberry, strawberry and lychee. Then there’s vanilla, chocolate, candy, root beer and coke flavours.
More WTF ones include champagne, bubble gum, green tea, chill oil, brussels sprout, corn cream stew (soup), teriyaki, curry, octopus, takoyaki, kimchi, squid ink and wasabi.
8) RAMUNE WITHOUT THE MARBLE ISN'T RAMUNE
Apparently Ramune is only Ramune if it comes in that uniquely shaped bottle (called a codd-neck bottle) with the marble in it.
9) YOU CAN MAKE RAMUNE AT HOME
*watch vid for instructions*
10) RAMUNE USED TO BE THE WORLD'S MOST DANGEROUS SOFT DRINK
Kids wanted the marble, and were willing to break the glass bottle to get it. Nowadays bottles are unbreakable and kiddy-proof so are no longer dangerous.
