Rafflesia is a genus of parasitic flowering plants and the official state flower of Sabah. There are approximately 55 species of Rafflesia all found in Southeast Asia, 9 of which can be found in Borneo. They are a rare beauty with an unusual size of up to 100cm in diameter and can weigh up to 10kg. The only visible part of the plant is a single large 5 petaled flower which omits a foul odor to attract insects and flies to aid in pollination. Pictured is a rare double bloom of Rafflesia Keithii, a species endemic to Sabah. Once the bud emerges it lies “dormant” for 6-9 months. Rafflesia Keithii begin their bloom at night and start to decompose only two to three days later. The long “dormant” period combined with a short blooming period and the fact that both male and female flowers must be open simultaneously for pollination to occur are all stacked against rafflesia.
