Zhangwuzhi (Treatise on Superfluous Things)
Written by Wen Zhenheng (1586-1645), Ming dynasty
Late Ming imprint, Collection of the National Central Library
This book was written in the early 17th century. The pronunciation of the character 長 in the title is the fourth tone of zhang, and the phrase zhangwu is taken from the quotation "Shenwu Zhangwu" in the Shishuo Shinyu (New Account of Tales of the World), meaning accessory personal belongings. The exhibits on view are meant to present what Wen saw, touched and lived by in his daily life. Trivial as they may seem, these object are nevertheless embedded with cultivated taste.

"How old are you?" It may be weird to be asked this question by strangers in the US, but not in every culture.
On May 24, I visited Xinalug, a remote village in the mountainous Northern Azerbaijan near the Russian border. While walking through stone built houses on top of a mountain as one of the only two visitors there, a couple of boys looked at me and asked "what's your name?" "How old are you?" "Where are you from?" Their English pronunciation was surprisingly good, but our conversation ended after these 3 Q&A's. I guess these are probably some of the few English sentences they learned from school.
To be honest, they're not the only locals who tried to talk to me with simple English. Several other adults also asked if I need a place to stay overnight, which is for them a business opportunity. But as soon as I said I didn't need it, they simply talked to me as guests without pushing me to spend money on anything. This is something I really liked about the Caucasus -- the locals are not yet contaminated by tourists, and you don't need to worry about being plundered by them.

Cantonese almost became the official language😊 I PROUD TO SPEAK #CANTONESE ❤️
Putonghua is the official language on the mainland, but if history had played out differently the vast majority could have been speaking Cantonese.
In 1912, shortly after the fall of the Qing dynasty, the founding fathers of the republic met to decide which language should be spoken in the new China.
Mandarin - now known as Putonghua [the common language] - was then a northern dialect spoken by the hated Manchurian officials. While it had served as China's lingua franca for centuries, many perceived it as an 'impure form' of Chinese.
Many of the revolutionary leaders, including Sun Yat-sen, were from Guangdong - which has long been China's land of new ideas. A great debate started between the delegates and eventually led to a formal vote. Cantonese lost out by a small margin to Putonghua and the rest is history.
While historians today still argue about the authenticity of the story, it is something Guangdong people love to tell. Many Cantonese speakers feel proud of their native language, saying it has more in common with ancient classical Chinese than Putonghua - which is a mix of northern dialects heavily influenced by Manchurian and Mongolian.
Linguists agree to some extent. 'Cantonese is closer to classical Chinese in its pronunciation and some grammar,' Jiang Wenxian, a Chinese language scholar, said. 'Using Cantonese to read classical poetry is a real pleasure,' he said. 'Many ancient poems don't rhyme when you read them in Putonghua, but they do in Cantonese.
'Cantonese retains a flavour of archaic and ancient Chinese. Nowadays few people understand classical Chinese, so Cantonese should be protected as a type of language fossil helping us study ancient Chinese culture.'
Cantonese is spoken by about 70 million people in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau and communities abroad.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Guangdong was the only Chinese province allowed to trade directly with foreigners. Many Westerners at the time learned Cantonese. Up till very recently, there were more Cantonese speakers in overseas Chinese communities than Putonghua speakers. In Canada, for instance, Cantonese is the third most commonly spoken language after English and French.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (Thai: วัดพระธาตุดอยสุเทพ, Thai pronunciation: [wát.pʰráʔ.tʰâat.dɔɔj.sùʔ.tʰêep], Northern Thai pronunciation: [wa̋t.pʰa̋ʔ.tʰâat.dɔɔj.súʔ.têep]) is a Theravada wat in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. The temple is often referred to as "Doi Suthep" although this is actually the name of the mountain where it's located. It is a sacred site to many Thai people. The temple is 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from the city of Chiang Mai. From the temple, impressive views of Chiang Mai can be seen.
Chùa Phrathat Doi Suthep (tiếng Thái: วัดพระธาตุดอยสุเทพ Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep) là một trong những ngôi chùa thiêng liêng nhất tại Chiang Mai (Thái Lan) và được nhiều người Thái Lan tin sùng. Đây cũng là nơi nhiều tín đồ Phật giáo hành hương trong các ngày lễ lớn.

China owes its most famous beer to the Germans! Tsingtao as the beer is known comes from Qingdao (same pronunciation, the spelling is different due to two different methods of writing Chinese in the English Alphabet is the beginning of my great adventure conquering the North of China, I'd like to introduce you to it and let you all know what this journey is all about, join me as my big adventure gets underway!
Although it was to be a rather short stay for the German occupiers (they would be defeated by Japanese forces after only fifteen years) they would within this short period of time leave a sizable footprint. They built a railroad, made improvements to the harbor and even opened a shipyard (Steinmetz 438). They would also continue to establish their Christian presence through the construction of churches, and were able to construct a brewery, whose first batch of beer was finished in 1904. The brewery has continued to produce beer ever since, and has brought the city national and international recognition.

Bánh mì (/ˈbæn ˌmiː/; Vietnamese pronunciation: [ɓǎɲ mî]) is a Vietnamese term for all kinds of bread. The word is derived from bánh (bread) and mì (wheat, also spelled mì in northern Vietnam). Bread, or more specifically the baguette, was introduced by the French during its colonial period. The bread most commonly found in Vietnam is a single-serving baguette, which is usually more airy than its Western counterpart, with a thinner crust.
The term bánh mì is also sometimes used as a synecdoche for a "Vietnamese sandwich".
In the Western Hemisphere, especially in areas with substantial Vietnamese expatriate communities, the term is used to refer to a type of meat-filled sandwich on bánh mì bread, found in Vietnamese bakeries. Unlike the traditional French baguette, the Vietnamese baguette is made with rice flour along with wheat flour.[2] Typical fillings include steamed, pan-roasted or oven-roasted seasoned pork belly, Vietnamese sausage, grilled pork, grilled pork patties, spreadable pork liver pâté, pork floss, grilled chicken, chicken floss, canned sardines in tomato sauce, soft pork meatballs in tomato sauce, head cheese, fried eggs, mock duck, and tofu. Accompanying vegetables typically include fresh cucumber slices, cilantro (leaves of the coriander plant) and pickled carrots and daikon in shredded form. Common condiments include spicy chili sauce, sliced chilis, mayonnaise, and cheese.
In the Vietnamese language, these sandwiches would be referred to as e.g. bánh mì xíu mại for a baguette with crushed pork meatball, bánh mì pâté chả thịt for a baguette or sandwich with pâté, Vietnamese sausage and meat, usually pork bellies, since it is the most common kind of meat. Almost all of these varieties are innovations made by or introduced in Saigon and they are known as bánh mì Sài Gòn ("Saigon-Style" banh mi); the most popular form is bánh mì thịt (thịt means "meat"). However, even in Vietnam, "a bánh mì for breakfast" implies a meat-filled sandwich for breakfast, not just bread.
The Vietnamese sandwich, sometimes called a "bánh mì sandwich", is a product of French colonialism in Indochina, combining ingredients from the French (baguettes, pâté, jalapeño, and mayonnaise) with native Vietnamese ingredients, such as cilantro, cucumber, and pickled carrots and daikon.
Bánh mì đặc biệt ("special combo" sandwich)
The classic version, bánh mì thịt nguội, sometimes known as bánh mì đặc biệt or "special combo", is made with various Vietnamese cold cuts, such as sliced pork or pork bellies, chả lụa (pork sausage), and head cheese, along with the liver pâté and vegetables like carrot or cucumbers.
