Lord of the Sabbath

“Now on the second Sabbath after the first, he was going through the grain fields. His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate, rubbing them in their hands. Why did Jesus allow His disciples to do what was not lawful on a Sabbath day?

We must understand why He—the Lord of the Sabbath, gave the Sabbath.

It was supposed to be a day for man to enjoy rest from his work.

The Pharisees did not see the good intention of God. They keep laws for the sake of doing it, and they value the laws more than mankind’s welfare. They have religiosity and legalism, with no love or compassion.

Jesus is the same God who allowed David and his men to eat the holy show bread without striking them dead.

We can see that God’s intention is to take good care of us. He is a loving God—not one who seeks to enslave mankind with burdensome laws.

Let us have a heart like Jesus, to prioritize the things that truly matter. Everything God does is for mankind’s good!

13) And the evening and the morning were the third day.
有晚上，有早晨，是第三日。

14) And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
神說：「天上要有光體，可以分晝夜，作記號，定節令、日子、年歲，

15) And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
並要發光在天空，普照在地上。」事就這樣成了。

16) And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: the stars also.

31) And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
神看著一切所造的都甚好。有晚上，有早晨，是第六日。

Genesis (創世記) 2 : 1 - 3
1) Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
天地萬物都造齊了。

2) And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
到第七日，神造物的工已經完畢，就在第七日歇了他一切的工，安息了。

3) And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
神賜福給第七日，定為聖日；因為在這日，神歇了他一切創造的工，就安息了。

Exodus (出埃及記) 20 : 8 - 11

因為六日之內，耶和華造天、地、海，和其中的萬物，第七日便安息，所以耶和華賜福與安息日，定為聖日。

Heaven Points to Jesus

“Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. Behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from the sky, and came and rolled away the stone from the door, and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. For fear of him, the guards shook, and became like dead men. The angel answered the women, “Don’t be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus, who has been crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, just like he said. Come, see the place where the Lord was lying. Go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead, and behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there you will see him.’ Behold, I have told you.” They departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring his disciples word. As they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!” They came and took hold of his feet, and worshiped him.” (Matthew‬ ‭28:1-9‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

It is interesting how unbelievers are scared of angels. Just one dazzlingly bright angel was enough to cause a great earthquake, roll away the huge stone from the front of the tomb, and scare the Roman soldiers until they fainted.

It must be the sin consciousness that causes them to be afraid of divine punishment.

On the other hand, the women who came to see Jesus’ body did not faint upon seeing the angel. Their slight fear was only from not knowing who this being was. Being with Jesus made them bold and acquainted with the supernatural.

“For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways. They will bear you up in their hands, so that you won’t dash your foot against a stone.” (Psalms‬ ‭91:11-12‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Every day, these mighty angels guard us in all our ways, protecting us from harm. We don’t have to fear men when they will faint upon seeing our heavenly bodyguards.

And of course the passage doesn’t end with an angel because our focus has to be the commander of angel armies.

Jesus appeared and the women took hold of His feet, worshipping Him. They didn’t worship the angel, and the angel’s message was all about Jesus.

Jesus—the one that heaven proclaims. Let’s worship Him, for He is risen and alive forevermore!
