英語で「臆病」を辞書で調べると・・・
=================================
「臆病」は英語に直訳しにくい言葉の1つです。実際に辞書で「臆病」を調べると、たくさんの表現が紹介されています。日本語で臆病といえば、気が弱かったり心配性であったり、些細な事にも怖がるといった意味全てが含まれますが、英語では状況よって使い分けが必要です。今日は臆病を意味する4つの英語と、それぞれのニュアンスの違いについてご説明します。
--------------------------------------------------
1) Coward
→「臆病者/いくじなし」
--------------------------------------------------
危険でリスクがあることに対する一歩が踏み出せなかったり、困難な状況をできるだけ避けようとする、いわゆる“いくじなし”を意味します。かなりネガティブなニュアンスで相手を侮辱する際に使われ、自分自身に対して使われることは殆どありません。例えば、アメリカでは銃で無差別殺人を犯す人をCowardと表します。
✔その他、痛みに弱い人のこともCowardと言います。例えば、注射が苦手で歯医者に行くのが怖い場合は「I'm a coward when it comes to going to the dentist.」と表現します。
<例文>
What are you afraid of? Don't be such a coward!
(何を怖がっているの?臆病な行動は取らない!)
You are such a coward. If you have a problem, just say it.
(いくじなしっ!問題があるならはっきり言いなよ!)
I'm a coward when it comes to heights.
<例文>
Go talk to her. You're such a wimp.
(彼女に話しかけなよ。気が小さんだから。)
He's a fighter? He looks wimpy to me.
(彼格闘家なの?弱そうに見えるのですが・・・)
You better not wimp out and go home.
(ビビって帰っちゃダメだよ。)
--------------------------------------------------
3) Insecure
→「精神的に不安定/自意識過剰」
--------------------------------------------------
自分自身に対して自信がなく、常に周りからどのように思われているかを気にするようなタイプの人を指します。特に自分の欠点ばかりを気にする自意識過剰な人です。例えば、モデルさんが体重を常に気にすることを「She's insecure about her weight.」と表現します。
✔「〜に不安を抱く」と言う場合は「Feel/Is insecure about _____.」
<例文>
I have my insecurities.
(私は臆病です。)
He feels insecure about his pronunciation.
(彼は自分自身の発音に不安があります。)
Don't be insecure of yourself.
(臆病にならないで!)
--------------------------------------------------
4) Timid
→「気弱な/内気な/気が弱い(小さい)」
--------------------------------------------------
Shyと似た意味で、自信がなく内気であることを表します。おどおどした行動をとったり、物事が悪い結果になることばかり恐れている人のことを指します。例えば、何かイベント事に参加しても、人見知りで他人との会話を避ける人のことを「Timid person」と表現します。
<例文>
Matt is very timid with girls.
(マットさんは女性に対してとても弱気です。)
He has a timid look on his face.
(弱気な表情をしています。)
My dog is really timid.
(私の犬はとても臆病者です。)

How to overcome fear of speaking a language 🙈
(PS...new video coming on Monday about whether or not introverted language learners REALLY need to practice speaking or not ... keep your eyes peeled for that discussion!)
Anyway, here are some tips for overcoming fear in those situations where you do need to use a foreign language. 👀
1. Analyze the situation and go easy on yourself 🥰
Identify WHY you’re afraid of speaking a language. It could be because you’re too shy or because you don’t know enough vocabulary. If you use the wrong particle, grammar structure or word, what’s the worst that can happen? If people laugh at you, that’s a reflection of them as a person, not you.
2. Prepare vocabulary and phrases in advance ✍🏽
When I was working as a design intern at a Japanese company, I was really scared that I wouldn’t understand anything during meetings and presentations. It helped me a lot to look up words I suspected I might hear during the internship. I built vocabulary lists and example sentences of design-related vocabulary. You can’t find a textbook for every topic, so taking matters into your own hands and creating your own language learning materials boosts your confidence.
If you cannot remember or don’t know a word, you can always talk around the word and describe it in another way. If you don’t know the word for “cake” for example, but you know the words “sweet” and “food”, you can say “sweet food” and they might say “cake?” in return.
3. Practice beforehand 💬
Just like practicing a speech for a presentation, you can practice using new words and phrases in a safe environment until you’re ready to use it with a native speaker. This could be talking to yourself, a pet, a chatting partner online, or a tutor. My favorite method is talking to people on voice apps. When I can’t see someone’s face and they can’t see mine, I feel less ashamed of making mistakes.
4. Record yourself 🎥
You'll hear your mistakes easier and be able to correct them if you need to, but you'll also gain confidence over time hearing that you aren't actually as bad as you think you are! You can use sites like Forvo to hear a native pronunciation or ask a native speaker friend you trust to correct you first, if you like.
5. Relax ☺️
Remember not to take language learning too seriously. Your goal is to communicate with others, right? It’s counter-effective to worry about using the right words and grammar each time you try to say something. And it's always OK if you prefer to do other activities rather than speaking - we all learn languages for different reasons and if you prefer reading books and watching movies, that's totally fine too 💕

Hello guys!
My name is Nam, I’m an English Teacher at IELTS Fighter for 1 year. When you’re looking at my picture, you can see I try hard to do workout, I am also into reading books (mind-twisting and thought-provoking books and novels), listening to Rap and Hip-hop whenever I have free time.
I’ve never ever thought that I will become an English teacher due to my childhood story. I got started kinda late compared to my friends. It is embarassing to see all of your friends communicating in English, but you were just locking yourself away with primary textbooks, and i was shy and insecure about how bad at english I was. But my destiny has changed since I met the right teacher of my life, is Ms. Thao, she was an adoring, knowledgeable and inspiring person, the most respectable person i had ever met in my life. She is also a motivation for me to become an English teacher as you can see for now.
As for the story to have me here with you right now, it was a long long story. Actually i was born in a family that is not very rich, so i couldn’t have much chance to talk to foreigners. I didn’t have finance, so i had to figure out the best way to overcome this situation. And one way to do it was that i locked myself away with TV shows , with Hollywood movies. I was also a softie who are into romance, which is kind of embarrassing to tell you here but through all of that, I did improve my pronunciation in a positive way.
Since then, I tried my best to study English and got the IELTS at 8.0 overall, featuring 9.0 in Reading and Listening which I am really proud of. Last word, I want to say that: The best investment you can make is in yourself, and to all of my young students here, giving yourself a chance for the IELTS test would be a good first step.
I’m always here to help you, so see you in my class at IELTS Fighter!
