捷克參訪團來臺第四天，捷克科學院副院長哈夫拉斯（Zdeněk Havlas）今(3)日與捷克學研機構代表參訪本院，討論能源永續、生醫研究、量子電腦、人工智慧、COVID-19等前瞻議題。

會中，廖俊智院長與哈夫拉斯談及甲醇可能是未來扭轉氣候變遷的關鍵因素，相談甚歡。廖院長透過自己近期發表在國際期刊《Cell》的研究成果說明，未來如何可能將溫室氣體轉化成甲醇，並以此生產各式高價值含碳化合物。雙方有高度共識，並期許未來有機會能在氣候變遷、新能源應用等重要議題展開合作。

即使來訪時間有限，討論仍相當熱烈。討論議題包括本院基因體研究中心COVID-19快篩的研究過程、本院物理所透過場效應電晶體(Field Effect Transistor)提供即時檢測及輔助判斷治療新冠病毒，以及本院資訊所利用人工智慧將複雜的音樂即時轉化成樂譜，甚至可以系統性地記錄及分析民族音樂的技術等。

🇨🇿與會的捷克科學院理事會成員西荷洛娃(Hana Sychrova)會後表示，「這幾天連續聽了很多場政策演講後，今天來中研院聽研究很有趣，希望下次可以預留一整天時間來訪」。

本院與捷克科學院長期保有密切的學術研究合作關係，並已於2017年簽訂學術合作備忘錄。豐沛的學術能量也吸引捷克學生來臺，正就讀於本院國際研究生學程（TIGP）化學生物與分子生物物理學學程的博士生Petra Sterbova今天也出席會議，同鄉一見如故，捷克訪團中的大學代表更當場「挖角」，希望她學成後返國貢獻。

近5年雙方互動頻繁，2015年捷克科學院亞非中心於本院歷史語言研究所設置亞非研究所臺北中心，並派駐訪問研究人員，促進臺灣與中東歐地區的文化交流。2018年哈夫拉斯曾來臺參與本院九十週年院慶活動。今（2020）年3月廖院長更與捷克科學院院長札日曼洛娃（Eva Zažímalová）透過視訊會議談論COVID-19的防疫合作。

Vice President of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) Zdeněk Havlas and representatives from various Czech research institutions visited Academia Sinica on September 3, the fourth day of the Czech delegation’s visit to Taiwan. Several cutting-edge topics were discussed, including sustainable energy, biomedical research, quantum computers, artificial intelligence, and COVID-19.

During the meeting, Academia Sinica President James Liao and Zdeněk Havlas had a lively discussion about methanol being a key factor in combatting climate change, based in part on President Liao’s recently-published Cell journal article, which explained the possibility of converting greenhouse gases into methanol in order to produce high-value chemicals. Both parties reached a consensus during the meeting, and are looking forward to collaborating on issues such as climate change and new energy applications in the future.

During the past five years, Academia Sinica has interacted frequently with the Czech Academy of Sciences. Since the establishment of the CAS Oriental Institute’s Research Center at the Institute of History and Philology in 2015, visiting researchers have strengthened cultural exchanges between Taiwan, Central Europe, and Eastern Europe. In 2018, Zdeněk Havlas attended Academia Sinica’s 90th Anniversary celebrations, and this year President Liao held an online meeting in March with CAS President Eva Zažímalová to discuss joint efforts in COVID-19 prevention.

สัปดาห์ก่อน ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริการายงานตัวเลข
การว่างงานพุ่งทะลุ 20.5 ล้านคน ในเดือนเมษายน
รวมถึงมีรายงานว่าบริษัทอเมริกันยื่นล้มละลายไปแล้วกว่า 78 แห่ง

เรื่องนี้ส่งผลให้อัตราว่างงานชาวอเมริกันอยู่ที่ระดับ 14.7%
ซึ่งถือเป็นระดับที่ย่ำแย่ที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์
นับตั้งแต่ Great Depression ในปี ค.ศ. 1929 หรือ 91 ปีก่อน

วิกฤติในครั้งนั้น ดัชนีตลาดหุ้นสหรัฐอเมริกา (Dow Jones)
ลดลงจากจุดสูงสุดที่ 381.17 จุด ตกลงมาสู่จุดต่ำสุดที่ 41.22 จุด

ถ้าบอกว่าตอนนี้เรากำลังอยู่ในช่วงวิกฤติเศรษฐกิจที่ย่ำแย่สุดในรอบประวัติศาสตร์
ทุกคนก็คงยอมรับ

แต่นโยบายทางการเงินที่ธนาคารกลางหลายประเทศทั่วโลก กำลังทำอยู่ตอนนี้
ก็ถือว่าเป็นนโยบายที่บ้าบิ่นที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์เช่นกัน

เพราะตอนนี้ ธนาคารกลางในหลายประเทศหั่นอัตราดอกเบี้ยนโยบายลง
รวมถึงอัดฉีดเงินเข้าระบบมหาศาล แบบที่ไม่เคยเกิดขึ้นมาก่อน

การอัดฉีดเงินเข้าระบบ หรือ Quantitative Easing (QE) เป็นนโยบายทางการเงิน
ที่เริ่มต้นมาจากประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาในยุควิกฤติซับไพรม์ ปี ค.ศ. 2008
ซึ่งใช้ได้ผลดี และทำให้สหรัฐอเมริกาฟื้นจากวิกฤติมาได้อย่างรวดเร็ว

และก็เหมือนคนเคยเจ็บป่วย กินยาหาย
เมื่อป่วยอีกก็อยากกินยานั้นอีกครั้ง..

ซึ่งรอบนี้ การอัดฉีดเงินในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาก็ได้วิวัฒนาการเป็น Unlimited Quantitative Easing หรือ การพิมพ์เงินอัดเข้าไปพยุงสภาพคล่อง และธุรกิจไม่จำกัดวงเงิน ไม่จำกัดระยะเวลา

ถึงตอนนี้ธนาคารกลางประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาอัดฉีดเงินเข้าระบบไปแล้วกว่า 1.8 ล้านล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ หรือ 58 ล้านล้านบาท คิดเป็นกว่า 3.6 เท่าเมื่อเทียบกับ GDP ประเทศไทยปีที่ผ่านมา

ทั้งหมดนี้สะท้อนไปยังความเชื่อมั่นในตลาดทุนที่ฟื้นกลับมาอย่างรวดเร็ว
แม้ว่าจะเกิด Circuit Breaker หลายครั้งในหลายประเทศตลอด 2 เดือนที่ผ่านมา

การฟื้นตัวอย่างรวดเร็วแบบนี้ สะท้อนให้เห็นว่าตอนนี้หลายคนยังมองวิกฤติโรคระบาด
มีแนวโน้มที่กำลังจะสิ้นสุดภายในไม่กี่เดือนที่จะถึงนี้ และนโยบายทางการเงินที่บ้าคลั่งกำลังจะรักษาวิกฤตินี้ได้

This reflects this year's crisis worth of severe damage.
Even more than the 2 world wars era and all economic crisis that our generation can imagine.

Apart from England, many other countries are facing.
With the worst economy in history, there is no difference.

Last week USA reported numbers
Unemployment surpassed 20.5 million people in April.
Including 78 American companies have been filed bankruptcy.

This resulted in the American unemployment rate at 14.7 % level.
Which is the worst level in history.
Since Great Depression in July Prof. 1929 or 91 years ago

Crisis at that time, U.S. stock market index (Dow Jones)
Dropped from 381.17th highs, fell to 41.22th lowest point.
Think about 89 % in 3 years.

A 89 % deal of U.S. stock market at that time was close to the agreement of the Thailand Stock Exchange Index.

GDP Thailand is 7.6 % negative.

While this year, IMF predicts GDP Thailand will be 6.7 % negative.

It's equal to the current crisis, countries around the world, including Thailand, are facing the most severe economic crash once in history.

Back to back, not as severe as in the past..

So what's the difference between now and past situation?
Investing man will tell you about it.

If we say we are now in the worst economic crisis in history
Everyone would accept it.

But the monetary policy that many central banks around the world are doing now.
It's considered the craziest policy in history too.

Because now, central banks in different countries cut interest rate policies down.
Including pumping money into the system like never before.

Pumping money into a system or Quantitative Easing (QE) is a monetary policy.
Starting from USA in subprime crisis era B.E. 2008
Which works well and quickly revives the U.S. crisis.

And it's like someone who has been sick. Take medicine to heal.
When I'm sick again, I want to take that pill again..

This time, the money pumping in USA evolves into Unlimited Quantitative Easing or printing money to support liquidity and business. Unlimited amount of money. No time limit.

Until now, the Central Bank of USA has pumped over 1.8 trillion USD or 58 trillion Baht. It's more than 3.6 times compared to GDP Thailand last year.

This all reflects confidence in rapidly reviving capital markets.
Despite the Circuit Breaker many times in different countries for the last 2 months.

A speedy recovery like this reflects that many people are still looking at the epidemic crisis.
It's likely to end within the next few months and insane monetary policies are going to cure this crisis.

However, no one knows what ′′ we have to pay ′′ from implementing this crazy financial policy will impact future economic system.

If everything is completely back to normal
People travel normally, go on a regular trip.
Our purchase demands are back at the same spot.

Money overflowing from monetary policy today
Will be dropped in the future

And on that day
A person who is addicted to drugs but stop using them.
We will know how the symptoms are..

I’ve received a few questions from students and teachers about my e-learning experience since lockdown. Well, I’m not sure about other schools in the UK, but for my school, we use a variety of means for our online learning: live lessons, set work, and Internet websites. For your information, I’m currently in Year 8, which is the second year of secondary school. Things might be different in other years, but I’ll talk about our e-learning for Year 8.

Our online learning is exactly the same as ‪a 9am-4pm‬ normal school day, from registration until the end of the day, with 8 periods and the same timetable, except we do it all at home. The subjects we’ve done through online learning are English, Religious Studies, History, Biology, Maths, Latin, Drama, Art, French, Physics, Design and Technology, Geography, Music, Chemistry, and Sports. Some were through live lessons, and other times, we were set work, where we had to work and then submit it digitally at the end of every lesson. And of course, we have break and lunch at normal times.

For live lessons, we’ve been using an app called Zoom, which is widely used by other schools and universities. Each session lasts for 40 minutes, and there are different things both the teacher and the students can do. If it’s required, you can turn on your webcam, or just have the mic on. There is an option to mute the mic, so not everyone is talking over each other at the same time. And what’s really useful is that you can share your computer screen with others, so you can put up notes, a question, or anything else you need pupils to see.

In terms of set work, we’ve been using Google Classroom most of the time. That’s where teachers can set assignments, post announcements, and ask questions. We’ve also been set work on Firefly, our school’s intranet system.

For Maths specifically, we’ve had live lessons on Zoom where the teacher shared their screen with us so we could see the notes and answer questions. Also, we were set work on a website called MyiMaths, where the teacher can set tasks related to specific topics. This could also be the case for other subjects, such as languages, where you could be set tasks on websites like Duolingo etc.

Personally, I find that the live lessons are the most successful for introducing new topics or going over more difficult work, because the teacher is there to explain the work to you, and if you’re stuck, you can ask them a question. However, set tasks work just as well if the work is more straightforward.

Hopefully, this little bit of my e-learning experience could be useful for both students who want to know more about what e-learning is like, and for teachers who want to create an ideal work environment for online school. [HAS MCDONALD'S CONQUERED ASIA?]

If McDonald's were a country, it's revenue would make it the 105th largest economy in the world, surpassing the GDP of Estonia, Cambodia & Afghanistan.

The number of McDonald's employees worldwide would be more than the entire population of Iceland, Barbados and Samoa.

It's a big company, but it wasn't always that way.

McDonald's was founded on May 15th, 1940 in San Bernardino, California - that's over 77 years ago - and has since expanded to a 120 countries and territories around the world, serving 68 million customers each day.

It took 27 years for the first McDonald's to appear outside of the US, and 31 years to make it's way to a second continent.

THIS continent was Asia, and in this video I'm going to take you through the next 46 years of McDonald's' Asian ascension.

So, which Asian country was the FIRST to open a McDonald's? What did McDonalds have to sacrifice in order compete with local markets? And how much of Asia is there still left to conquer, as of today?

We'll get into all of that, so grab a double cheeseburger (maybe some fries), and we'll explore every Asian country to have ever had a McDonald's.

- McDonald's Georgia for having the chain's most exquisite outlet.
