Eat. Poop. Sleep. Repeat.
No, I’m not describing your husbands (or, am I?). This is the life of a baby and if you’re breastfeeding or the food source for your baby, then a lot of your day (and night) will be taken up with either food production or food delivery.
A few tips I’ve learned from the first time around and now, the second time.
Tools to have:
Breastfeeding pillow (or pillows). Use these to make sure you and your baby are in the most comfortable position you can possibly be in, because you will be in this position often, and for long periods of time.
Breastfeeding cover (for when you’re in the public and don’t feel like flashing everybody)
Silicon pump - to collect that extra milk that comes out the other boobie. Don’t waste any good stuff!
Breastfeeding pads (But if it’s just not convenient to have both boobs out, then breast pads to collect any extra dripping is probably a good thing. Unless you like having two wet patches on all of your shirts.)
Nipple cream. Nipple cream. Nipple cream. (for those cracked, or painful nipples)
Dry wipes/drool wipes
Breastfeeding bras and tops. Clip on and off. So convenient. There are bras, bra tops, dresses, shirts, all sorts of things which can help your baby get access to your boobie easier without you having to take off all of your clothes.
Herbal teas, breast milk inducing drinks, lecithin powders to help produce more milk, but also to help from clogging your ducts.
Milk storage bags - for all that (hopefully) excess breast milk you will have and can freeze and use later.
Baby app on the phone to help you remember when the baby ate, peed/pooped, slept because time flies when you have a baby and just when you are ready to sit down on the toilet or have a nice cup of tea with biscuit, suddenly, it’s time to feed them again.
A few general rules:
Breastfeed (or pump) often to avoid engorgement, or worse, mastitis, and also to maintain your supply of breastmilk.
Change your feeding position often especially if you have hard lumps or clogging in a particular part of your boob (general positions: football, cradle, lying down, upside down… yes, as in, you are lying down and your baby is lying next to you but upside down…). Ask a lactation consultant if you have any questions or issues.
Hot compresses, hot showers, massages, vibration are great to ease the milk out or for clogged milk ducts.
Cold compresses are good if you are overly engorged and the boobies are feeling uncomfortable.
And, ladies… mommies, I know you think your child is the cutest most adorable thing on the planet (it’s not, because mine is. Just kidding. Or am I?), but you need to stop looking down at him/her while breastfeeding because you, like me, are going to get neck aches, which can lead to back pain and also headaches. But that’s WHOLE DIFFERENT post…

Look who came to visit! "It's like we are having a staycation right, Mama? Woohoo!"
The first birth experience usually affects the subsequent ones, doesn't it? For me, I gave birth to the big girl in a small town called Karlskrona in Sweden, where the hubby was posted for naval training. We didn't have to pay for the stay other than a small admin fee, we had a huge private ward with two beds - one for me, one for the hubby, the nurses and midwives were friendly and traditional - they used wooden pinard stethoscopes and measuring tapes, I sat on a gym ball instead of lying down, they asked me if I wanted ice cream to relieve the pain instead of mentioning the word epidural, and there was no such thing as a nursery which means our baby girl was with us 24/7 once she came into this world.
All these were precious memories and learning experiences for me, and I cherished that opportunity to witness a different culture that I might not have able to otherwise. So for my subsequent births in Singapore, I requested for my baby to room-in with me every single time, I had the courage and confidence to say no to epidural and I appreciate the comfort and calmness of my ward.
Yup, this is indeed the only 'staycation' we have willingly paid for (our occasional family hotel staycays are sponsored but you do know I work hard for every one of them in return, right?) and I love it because when the baby rooms in with me, it's just me and him/her and that bond we build right from the start is invaluable and irreplaceable.
Sure, the nurses tell me I should just sleep and let them take care of my baby, or that they can supplement with formula so I don't need to breastfeed exclusively, or that I don't need to change soiled diapers and can leave it to them. But, didn't you just say this is my baby? I was taught to be an strong mum with my firstborn - we had to feed, change, burp and even bathe her ourselves at the hospital too, under the guidance of the nurse - and that's how I want it to be for all my kids right from the start.
Treasuring the close bond I have with each of my kids, especially so today. You are my motivation to persevere. Love you, my babies! ❤
P.S. These two were also born right here 8 and 5 years ago. How time flies!

Twinning with the big girl while she still loves to be matchy matchy with Mama. ❤ It's gonna be a special CNY for her because this is the first 牛 year for this baby born in the year of the Ox. 🐂
Yup, time flies and this girl is growing up so fast. Having a tween daughter is like having a BFF and besides sharing secrets, another awesome thing is that we also get to share apparel 👚, shoes 👢, bags 👜 and even jewellery 💍. I have been passing my cardigans and blouses to this 11yo who can soon fit into my heels and she is most thrilled that she can doll up for special occasions and put on my accessories too.
She loves the newly launched CNY festive limited-edition collection from @danielwellington, especially the Emalie Necklace, and I am more than happy to let her wear it when we go visiting this new year. I am wearing the Petite Suffolk leather watch which I foresee I will pass to her some day soon too. Haha.
You can gift these to your loved ones and enjoy 10% off when you buy any two or more items from the collection before 14 Feb. Check out the full collection (also includes the Emalie Earrings, Cherry Blush Classic Ring and Bracelet) and use my code "AHappyMum" for extra 15% off at www.danielwellington.com or any of their official retail stores in Singapore.
P.S. Love these photos we took when the siblings were napping. She hid my tummy well in the first shot, swipe to see how big it really is now that I am nearly 33 weeks. Yup, just a while more and we are gonna welcome another Ox baby into our family. We are all feeling very excited! 😁
