WARNING: LONG RANT AHEAD
This weekend was BEYOND HECTIC. We just completed 2 rescues in 1 night.
A total of 34 hamsters rescued in 1 night. Out of the 34, HSS volunteers are fostering the 22, on top of the roughly 20 hamsters already in our care. 😱
This is the damage that 2 households can cause 🤦♀️ – just by carelessly breeding their hamsters and not separating them.
Some of these hamsters may require vet attention as well, and we are running low on funds.
If you would like to help:
👉Spread the word on our adoptable hamsters – so that we can free up more space for these new batches. (all adopters will be screened)
👉If you would like to make a private donation, do reach out to us via PM.
👉Most importantly, help us spread awareness about proper hamster care so that (hopefully) these abandonment cases lessen.
So what happened?
➡️The first rescue occurred in Yishun – a good Samaritan found 17 hamsters of different ages stuffed into 4 cages, abandoned inside glass cabinets placed near the bin area. Their rescuer saw them at 9.30am as she left her home and at 1pm, decided to take them in.
They were in a sorry state – their cages dirty and scrambling on top of each other. When the rescuers contacted us, they also did their best to clean the cages and separate by the hamsters by gender. We collected all the hamsters all in 2 swift pickups by 10pm.
➡️During this time, another rescue was happening, organised and coordinated by two hamster lovers (another 2 good Samaritans). The condo management in Cairnhill was caring for another 14-17 hamsters abandoned in 8 cages. They were dumped in the bin centre there when the original owners moved out. Together, the two ladies rescued a total of 12 hamsters, some with suspected pregnancies.
We found out at 1am (yes, 1am at NIGHT) that one cage was left behind. A cage with a new mama hamster and her fresh jellybean babies. That’s when we sprung into action and rushed down to the condo to get the young mama. The rescue mission was a success. Our rescuer not only removed the wheel (which is really dangerous for newborns!), but also replaced their diet with more protein.
Mama was being fed oats and sunflower seeds, hardly the right nutrition for any hamster! We are pleased to report that Cairnhill mama is now safe and is still nursing her babies!
⚠️But if you thought the drama ended there, you’re wrong. One of the mother hamsters from the Yishun batch has rejected her jellybean babies due to stress and we are hand-feeding the babies every hour. Unfortunately, one jelly bean baby has passed. (RIP, baby🙏)
What a weekend it has been. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE IN PETS IF YOU CANNOT CARE FOR THEM THROUGHOUT THEIR LIFETIME. ANIMALS ARE NOT DISPOSABLE.
If you want to be a pet owner, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to do the research and purchase the RIGHT items for proper care. ⚠️In case you did not know, NOT ALL ITEMS SOLD IN PET SHOPS ARE SAFE (This advice applies to all animals, not just hamsters).
If you can't deal with an animal, get a stuffed toy. Want it to move? Get a Furby instead.
