Can Taiwan become the adventure capital of Asia?
Today, Ryan Hevern 何來恩 of Taiwan Adventure Outings convinced me that the answer is YES!
As a well-established Taipei-based tourism professional, Ryan possesses a wealth of experience which informs his understanding of opportunities and challenges faced by the leisure sector in our country. I wish to thank him for being so generous with his time, and visiting Taiwan NextGen Foundation this morning to discuss the nexus of tourism and sustainable development.
I sincerely hope that our country will prioritize low-impact, nature-based sustainable tourism as we devise a new strategy for tourism promotion for the years to come.
In recent years, Taiwan's leisure sector seemingly put all its eggs in one basket. Mass tourism and heavy dependence on tourist traffic from China defined the all-pervasive modus operandi of most tour operators.
The COVID-19 pandemic as well as the current impasse in cross-Strait relations will undoubtedly bring about changes in the current tourism landscape in Taiwan. Rather than a challenge, I see this as a unique window of opportunity. TAO has done a terrific job promoting adventure tourism in Taiwan, and I see great potential in scaling up this mode of travel.
