Increasing CO2 could take us back to scorching Paleogene period, say scientists

Heatwave temperatures similar to those that set the UK sizzling this summer could become normal by the end of the century if carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere continue to rise, say scientists.
科學家表示，如果在大氣中二氧化碳的濃度持續攀升，像現在英國所面臨的酷暑及高溫，到了本世紀結束前就會成為每天都有的常態氣候。

A new study predicts that without action to curb greenhouse gas emissions the climate of Western Europe could revert back to what it was 50 million years ago.
一項新的研究顯示，在沒有採取任何行動來抑制溫室氣體排放的情況下，西歐的氣候可能會變回五千萬年前的樣貌。

At that time, during the Paleogene period, average annual land temperatures soared to between 23C and 29C.

Weather conditions were hot, steamy and tropical.
當時的氣候狀況是炎熱，蒸氣繚繞，以及熱帶性的。

Professor Rich Pancost, one of the researchers from the University of Bristol, said: “Our work adds to the evidence for a very hot climate under potential end-of-century carbon dioxide levels.

The scientists studied fossil microbes in ancient peat to estimate land temperature 50 million years ago.

They found that annual land temperatures in Western Europe, as well as New Zealand, were significantly higher than previously thought.

Study leader Dr. David Naafs, from the University of Bristol’s School of Earth Sciences, said: “We know that the early Paleogene was characterized by a greenhouse climate with elevated carbon dioxide levels.

The findings appear in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Next the researchers want to investigate the effect of Paleogene heat in the tropics.

Dr. Naafs said: “Did the tropics, for example, become ecological dead zones because temperatures in excess of 40C were too high for most forms of life to survive?

“Some climate models suggest this, but we currently lack critical data.”

Anybody else obsessed with chili mango/chamango? I could literally eat that stuff for the rest of my life ?...but I'm pretty sure I would die so let's just wear mango inspired makeup for now! ?

Aside from some life updates, I opened up about being SE Asian and struggling with glorifying E Asian beauty standards (and why I stopped listening to K-Pop). I'm usually pretty reserved and don't open up about a lot on my channel but this is something that's been asked about pretty often (since I've touched on it briefly in the past) and wanted to share with you. I haven't been to the beach in the UK for about 16years, and all I really remember about that time was freezing cold water and not the best weather. So, the bar wasn't set that high when it came to my expectations...

But, Cromer, Well done! Well played bro! You've actually convinced me that England is actually pretty decent in summer.

Because the morning looked promising, we decide to pack the kids and beach things for a day in Cromer just along the East coast.

We didn't have a car so we decided to take the train there which was loads of fun. The kids love trains, especially the little boy, so it was quite exciting for them.

The weather also held up its end of the bargain and by the time we arrived in Cromer the sun was beaming down. But because we've all just come from tropical weather, we all still wore jackets and jumpers... just in case.

Saw some lovely owls on the beach. I'm not really the biggest fan of animals in captivity but... we went to take a look at them anyway.

After a lunch of fish and chips, the kids were not up for walked about a kilometer to the lighthouse at the top of the hill, so I went on a little solo adventure. Definitely worth it. The view from the top was magical.

By the time I came back, the kids were way past their dislike of getting dirty and covering themselves in sand and sea water. I, OF COURSE, joined them while Shelina took baby for a stroll.

The water was surprisingly warm. I could have swam if I had brought my costume. I was just convinced that the water would be icy cold. The kids didn't hesitate to throw themselves in. They left foot prints all the way up and down the beach.

So much fun! A freedom run!

After the antics, we made a lightening run for the train. (Literally, I was carrying one of the kids and running to get to the train) we caught it just 2 or 3 minutes before it was about to leave.
