English Learning Ecosystem Update

As I began exploring Instagram, I struggled to find a way to deliver useful academic content. Instagram posts typically focus on images, short clips, and concise text, which are attention grabbing but not always entirely conducive to language learning. I looked over the posts of established Instagram English learning accounts, and experimented with vocabulary posts and even news posts for a couple of weeks. Not wanting to post just images, I thought about creating something new even with the rigid format of the platform.

當我開始研究怎麼用IG，我想盡了各種辦法，希望能提供大家一些實用的學術內容。 IG 的特色著重在圖片、短片以及簡潔的文字，這樣的方式雖然很容易引人注目，卻不全然有助於語言學習。我瀏覽了 IG 上英文教學網紅的貼文，並在這幾週嘗試發了一些學術單字與新聞相關的文章。我並不想只是發一些圖片，而思考著要如何在既有框架下創作一些新的東西。

A tenet of using tech in education is to engage students with what they are familiar with, not give them an entirely new platform that is difficult to use. So, how could I create a new series of Instagram posts that is both educational and unique? I thought about my goal to disseminate academic English resources, and how I could leverage my experience as a curriculum writer and voice recording artist for public school textbooks.

So far, this is what I have at the moment. I will post Word of the Day (每日一詞), high frequency vocabulary words that you see in academic texts and sometimes on the news. These Tier 2 academic vocabulary words are not exclusive to a single domain and complement the theme-based approach I’ve taken with my mind-mapping vocabulary class. You can find other vocabulary learning methods here.

To help students use more precise and common academic phrases, I then added Academic Phrases (每日一句), set phrases that appear in both academic speech and writing. These phrases have varying functions from introducing a topic to comparing and contrasting ideas. There is a difference between speech and writing, so I picked words that could be used for both. If one is used only in a specific context, I will make note of it in the video recording. This series of posts will help students with language output, and can be found under the following hashtag 學術英語片語.

Last, I will follow up with an abridged version of breaking news (時事英文) with high frequency collocations and audio recordings. This will provide students with the input of not only individual words, but how to use them in output (speech and writing) with context. While all these news posts might seem independent at first, I will eventually link and organize them by theme when there are enough posts. Along with my news class, these extra posts will help students stay aware of current events, acquire set phrases used in journalism, and develop critical thinking. When I say I miss the stage, I’m not only referring to the two hours of live performance that you all see. I miss myself. I miss who I am during the process: learning new repertoire, spending endless hours in solitude learning all the notes at the piano, reading and looking up each word in the dictionary, trying to get the pronunciation and colouring of the text as authentic as possible. It’s the time spent observing, imitating, and drawing inspiration from all the great artists through dvds and videos. It’s the process of igniting my imagination, and gradually getting into the shoes of a new role, and finding new things about an old piece or a character along the way of rehearsing with other musicians. It’s the incomparable satisfaction of hearing my voice resonate and project into a big space with no artificial amplification. It’s the exchange of energy with people around me. It’s feeling that I want to pour my heart and soul out to the world through music without expecting anything in return. Everything in this process, including the really scary moments in which I doubt everything I do, to the exciting feeling of overcoming those obstacles and making little breakthroughs and connecting with the music and the people around… I miss them all. Right now I’m learning something which is a bit of a foreign concept: patience. I need patience to be at peace with the uncertainty of everything. 2020 is the first time in years that I’m forced (or given space and time) to sit down and listen to my inner voice, instead of singing with my soprano voice.

Jim Johnson is a professor of voice and accents at the University of Houston School of Theatre & Dance, where he received the Provost’s 2007 University Teaching Excellence Award and serves as the director of undergraduate programs for the School. Jim served as the director of the School of Theatre & Dance from 2013 – 2016. He works professionally as an actor and as a voice and dialect coach, and is a founder of AccentHelp, which offers over 40 sets of materials for different accents and dialects. Jim teaches and performs annually with the summer training institute of the Prague Shakespeare Company. He is an associate teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework, an associate editor for the International Dialects of English Archive and a member of the Voice and Speech Trainers Association. He received his M.F.A. in acting from the University of Nebraska — Lincoln. He formerly served on the faculty of The Theatre School of DePaul University and taught at the Audition Studio in Chicago, Illinois. He is currently represented by Pastorini-Bosby Talent Agency and is a member of Actors’ Equity.

Wesley: good style. Nice change ups and really good cadence. Also very strong stage presence, although his outfit looks kind of college nerdy but it works for him. Needs to change up his style so that he stands out more. The dancing needs more work, feels like he’s trying to hard and some shots but that’s OK because they’re college kids.

羅福公：really good. Strong stage presence and strong emoting. Excellent incorporation of Japanese, Chinese, and English. Although, some of the English pronunciation was way off even in the name of trying to make things rhyme. Aside from that his style is cool and not much to really improve. Dresses like a deep-sea fisherman from the movie life aquatic with Steve Zissou

Third guy: technically really decent rapper. Although the drunken/lazy Mumble rap tongue rhyme scheme has been done better by 蛋頭. Really liked the HAM part towards the end, but the incorrect incorporation of hip-hop lingo and lines from other popular American rap songs(Migos) was a bit off putting. Also most of the English is mispronounced.

Gfate: I didn’t get what you were trying to do at all. Are you rapping? Ranting? Mumbling? Nice voice tho.

Fifth Guy: Really dig his swag. His voice is deep and smooth. LIke the elongation style and his rhyming style just sways. Rapping style is very musical. Sounds like an instrument. Very confident and natural in front of the camera.

Kerrita: Nice singing voice but sometimes out of tune. Usage of pitch correction is pretty obvious. The English took me out. Also her jazz singing style doesn’t really match the song. Too much vibrato and execution of syncopation wasn’t precise. However, the rap was really good. I’d like to hear her rap more. Score: 3.0

As a Group: If you’re going to rep your school/present yourself as a crew, then you need to have some overall theme(dress, swag, etc) that presents you as a team. This video feels like random people came together for one project, but they don’t really know each other or have chemistry. Find something that makes your school/group unique and exploit it.

In 2020, the world seems like a cloud of gloom. Life is eroded by fear, and the distance between each person is getting farther. When we no longer have expectations the light of hope dims. What does BroadBand want to do about this?

We have always wanted to convey positive energy through music, and have wanted to add color to each other's lives. The human voice conveys sincerity and delicacy, and harmony shows the tension of music, which allows us to cheer and comfort one another.

"It would be great if I could sing with everyone!" The idea of singing for the world was hopeful, but we wanted to awaken people's admiration for life again.
BroadBand with OPUS MUSIC ARTS and AL Studio join forces with singers to give them voices, speak out together for the things we cherish!

The theme song of the animated Digimon–Butter-Fly–is not unfamiliar to ears of the generation born in the 80s and 90s. This lively rock song of the Japanese anime features energetic, inspirational lyrics. The resonating chorus has also become food that feeds our soul.

We hope that through our performance, this positive energy will be spread to the throughout the world. Just like the animated "DigiDestined", we use music to create hope. This year coincides with the 4th anniversary of the death of Hara Sang Wada Mitsuji (2016/4/3), we hope to pay tribute to him by covering his work.
