HongKongers have been making good use of the limited space to make a living - understairs shops 樓梯舖 is a good example to show.
Understairs shops were prominent in Hong Kong in the 50s, 60s and 70s. It is the tiny space found at the small entrance of 𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘢𝘶 (old tenement buildings 唐樓), right next to the staircase, in which people run small businesses like watch repair, shoemaking, tailoring, to support the family.
These understairs shops could soon become a history when these old buildings are demolished for urban redevelopment. While some has received notification from Building departments 屋宇處 that the shop is an unauthorised building work 僭建and others are forced to move due to the sharp rise in rents.
