這個禮拜Presentality的Andrew來分享英文寫作的節奏!

我的工作需要看非常多的英文。

其中有英文母語的人寫的，也有非母語的人寫的。最近，我注意到一個兩者之間很明顯的差別。這個差別很少有人提到，因為它無關文法正確，也不是有學問的用語，或是文雅的詞彙。

是句子的長短。

Well，更正確的來說，是長句跟短句的交錯。我發現，非母語人士寫的英文句子，不但比英文母語的人寫的長，而且是大部分句子都很長。

母語的人，尤其是很會寫的人，則是會把長句跟短句混合搭配。
那又怎樣？

你可能會說 ok，以英文為母語的人比較會用短的句子，那又怎樣？句子的長短，跟我寫作的好壞，有關嗎？

關係可大了。

就像音樂，或是影片，文字也是「內容」。只要是「內容」，就有它的節奏。你可以想像一首曲子，從頭到尾都是很長的音，而且一點變化都沒有嗎？或是一部很長的影片，從頭到尾都是很長的畫面，而且一點節奏的變化都沒有嗎？

Well actually，你應該可以想像，這些就是要幫助我們睡眠的。
如果你不想要你的讀者覺得無聊或甚至睡著，我建議適度變換你文字的節奏。

但我們先看案例。

我拿一篇台灣人寫的文，跟另一篇美國人寫的，來做比較：把每個句子都分拆成不同的段落，句子的長短就一目了然了。

台灣人寫的英文，句子都偏長，而且長度都差不多。
美國人寫的就不一樣了：一個只有五個字的句子開頭，然後一堆稍微長一點的句子，然後再來一串短句。

你可能懷疑我故意挑選很極端了例子出來，而且幹嘛專門打台灣人呢？

所以想到這裡，我從我的書架上，隨便挑了兩本跟科技有關的書出來。左邊的，是美國人，矽谷知名投資人 Peter Thiel。右邊的是德國人，但注意了，是一個英文非常好的德國人。他不但是世界經濟論壇的創辦人，研究所也是在哈佛大學唸的。

About Sentences
1. 一個句子只能有一個動詞(兩個動詞在一起會打架)， 當主詞和受詞的一定是名詞(或做名詞用) ， 一定要形容詞或名詞才能當補語(補充語意)
2. 助動詞和 be 動詞的否定在後面直接加 not 即可
3. 有疑問詞的問句，疑問詞要擺最前面， 有助動詞和 be 動詞的疑問句，要把助動詞或 be 動詞移到主詞前
4. 用什麼助動詞問，就用什麼助動詞回答， 一般動詞的否定和疑問要用助動詞
5. 祈使句要用動詞原形， 祈使句的否定在前面加 Don't 或 never
6. 間接問句不是問句，如: I know what it is. what it is不是問句，是一個名詞子句，或想成一個大名詞組。
7. 關係子句多半是形容詞子句，形容前面的先行詞，如: I see a man who lives there.

About Nouns.
1. 一個名詞在句中當主詞或受詞或補語
2. 普通名詞前面要有冠詞，要不然就是後面要加 -s 或 -es
3. 有特指的名詞前面要有定冠詞 the (特定或特指)/相對a或 an 用在沒有特指的東西上
4. 人稱代名詞的用法要熟悉，如: I my me mine 其中my 具形容詞特性。

About Verbs.
0. 動詞的種類包括: be (am is are, was were, been, be) has (has have had) do (does do did) 一般動詞 go, cut, walk ...
1. 及物動詞後一定要有受詞，不及物動詞後不能接受詞
2. 不完全的(及物和不及物)動詞後面，一定有補語
3. 助動詞後用原形動詞 Did he come here?
4. 連綴動詞後面要用形容詞 She looks beautiful.
5. 主詞第三人稱單數，現在式一般動詞要加 +s 或 +es -y+ies
6. 過去完成式要有過去式引導 He had come here since yesterday.
7. if 句型: if 子跟主要子句是相對應的，如:
A. if 現在式, 主要子句現在式或未來式
B. if 過去, 主要would have +過去分詞
C.if 過去完成 (would have pp), 主要子句 過去完成 (would have pp)
8. 使役動詞後面用原形動詞(受詞主動去做某事時) He makes her cry. 或，
使役動詞後面用過去分詞(受詞被....時) He makes it done.
9. 感官動詞後面用原形動詞或現在分詞(受詞主動去做某事時) He sees her go.

About Adjectives.
1. 形容詞形容名詞
2. 形容詞如果只有一個字，放在名詞前面，顏色大小好壞..有順序性 a red good pen
3. 動詞的過去分詞可當形容詞用(放名詞後倒修飾名詞) He read a book written by Mr. Wang.
4. 所有格後面要 + 名詞 所有格+名詞可以用所有格代名詞來代替 my book=mine.
5. 現在分詞有主動和進行中的意思，過去分詞則有被動和已經完成的意思
6. 冠詞、指示性形容詞、所有格不能同時形容一名詞
7. a friend of mine = one of my friends
8. 定冠詞加形容詞等於那一類名詞的複數 the public = people
9. 形容詞的原級、比較級、最高級規律和不規律的變化要記得good//better//the best

I’m here at this press conference today for one reason - I’d like to tell you in my own words how sorry I truly am. I have to express my deepest apologies to my family, my wife’s family, our friends and all those who have loved me because I‘ve made a mistake. A mistake which I can never make up for. A mistake that is unforgivable. Because of this wrong that I’ve done, I’ve been reviewing and reflecting on my behaviour. Indeed, I’ve made a disgrace of myself. It is true that I was under the heavy influence of alcohol that day, but being drunk can in no way excuse the grave mistake that I’ve made. I have felt deeply regretful for what I’ve done. I have found it difficult to face and accept myself. After reading the news report, I have found myself and my behaviour most shameful, deplorable, abominable, disgusting and absurd. I have pondered and reflected deeply on why I had not been able to exercise better self control and why lust would have had the better of me.

I shall bear full responsibility for what I’ve done. To that end, I shall do two things. The first thing is that I shall suspend all projects at hand until I found good in myself again and I have examined the way I’ve been conducting myself. The second thing is that I have, from the bottom of my soul, found myself to be ridiculous. Because of my wrongful behaviour, people around me, who have loved me, have been facing up to immense stress and pain. I hope that I could properly make it up to all those on whom I have inflicted pain. This report has made me reflect deeply on what I’ve done. 【英語字幕】OK. So today I would like to talk about cooking. Until three years ago, I was kind of guy who just never cooked. It's not like I wasn't interested in good food. I was just not interested in cooking, not interested in doing it yourself. I was like "well why do we have to do it because you can go to Gusto and eat an OK food". I never think that way anymore. And for some reason, about three years ago, I started cooking. And since then, what's been happening, since then, what's been happening to me is that I have more positive mind towards life. It's a big word, but I do have some kind of positive mind towards just daily living. And in my opinion I think every Junior High School student should learn how to cook. I think the schools should make it a regular subject to learn for students. I think by cooking, I mean, OK hold on... There's something I was going to say. There's something I was going to say. Hold on hold on. There's something I was going to say about cooking. What was this? Why is cooking so important? Why is that? In my opinion, cooking is such a fundamental skill to live a life. Like long time ago, if you cannot cook, if you cannot get what you eat, you would just die. So I think as a human cooking is such a fundamental skill to survive. So I think Junior High School students should learn how to cook and the schools should make it a regular class. And in my opinion even "ひきこもり" students will have... I have a solution for "ひきこもり" students. I think they should learn how to cook so that they will have more positive mind towards living. I think that's my solution for "ひきこもり" students.

自炊を始めて生活が楽しくなりました。もっと以前から自炊をできるようになりたかったです。
