覚えておきたい定番フレーズ「Hook up」
=================================
　
今日ご初回するフレーズ「Hook up」は、ネイティブの日常会話ではよく使われているのに、以外と知られていないフレーズの1つかと思います。「Hook up」は日本語の「繋ぐ」を表し、その意味合いからスラングとしても様々な状況で用いられている非常に便利なフレーズです。

1) Hook up A to B
→「AをBに接続する」

この表現は、電気器具や電気回線などを「接続する」ことを表します。例えば「スキャナーをあなたのパソコンに接続しました」は「I hooked up the scanner to your laptop.」になります。“Connect”の代わりに使える口語的な表現です。
　
✔使い方：「Hook up A to B / Hook A up to B」→「AをBに接続する」
　
＜例文＞
　
Can you hook up the projector to the tablet?
（プロジェクターをタブレットに接続してくれますか？）
　
You need to hook the mic up to the speakers.
（マイクをスピーカーに接続せな。）
　
Are you hooked up to the Internet?

2) Hook up with (someone)
→「（誰々と）イチャイチャする・肉体関係を持つ」

初対面や知り合って間もない人、または友達など恋人や夫婦ではない関係の人と「イチャつく」ことを表現する際に用いるインフォーマルな言い方です。但し、イチャイチャする程度はかなり漠然としており、ただ単にベタベタすることから、キスすること、さらには性行為に至るまで幅広い意味を成します。
　
✔使い方：「A hooked up with B」→「AさんはBさんとイチャイチャした。」
　
＜例文＞
　
Tony hooked up with Jessica last night.
（昨晩、トニーとジェシカは一夜を共にした。）
　
What? You hooked up with Jason? How did that happen?
（え？ジェイソンと一線を超えたん？何でそうなったん？）
　
Those two always hook up with each other when they're drunk.
（あの2人は酔っ払うといつもイチャイチャするんだよね。）

3) Hook A up with B
→「AさんをBさんに紹介する」

恋人募集中の人に誰かを紹介したり、ビジネス目的で人と人の橋渡しをしたりするなど、面識のない者同士を引き合わせる意味とし用いるパターンです。例えば、独身の友達に相性がピッタリ合いそうな同僚を紹介するなら、「I'll hook you up with my coworker. I think you guys will hit it off.（同僚に君のことを紹介するよ。意気投合するんじゃないかな）」となります。
　
✔使い方：「Hook A up with B」→「AさんをBさんに紹介する」
ビジネス目的で「人と人を繋ぐ」の意味としても使えるが、かなり砕けた表現になるので、あまり親しくない人との会話での使用は避けたほうが無難。
　
＜例文＞
　
Hook me up with Jennifer.
（ジェニファーに俺のこと紹介してーなー。）
　
My friend is going to hook me up with her classmate.
（友達が俺のことを（彼女の）クラスメイトに紹介してくれるって。）
　
I know the CEO of that company. I'll hook you guys up.
（あの会社の社長とは面識があるから紹介してあげるよ。）

4) Hook up with/for _____
→「〜に会う」

話し言葉として、人に「会う」を表現する際に“meet”に置き換えてこの表現を使う人がいます。しかし、基本的に「いつか会いましょう」や「後で会いましょう」のように未来に会う（特別な）状況で用いられ、現在形や過去形で表現してしまうと、上記2)で紹介した「イチャイチャする」や「肉体関係を持つ」と解釈されてしまいます。変な誤解を招かないよう、用法を十分に理解してから使用しましょう。
　
＜例文＞
　
We'll hook up with you guys after lunch.
（ランチの後に会いましょう。）
　
Are you busy tomorrow night? Let's hook up for dinner.
（明日の夜は忙しい？夕食でも一緒にどう？）
　
I'm going to hook up with my high school buddies next week.
（来週、高校の友達と会います。）

5) Hook someone up with something
→「誰かに何かを与える」

この用法は、親しい人への好意として、商品やサービスを無料であげたり、値段を安くしてあげたりすることを意味します。特に中々手に入らない物を入手するニュアンスがあります。例えば、東京ドームで働いている友達が売れ切れになったコンサートチケットを無料でくれた場合は「My friend hooked me up with tickets to the concert.」と言うことができます。
　
＜例文＞
　
Can you hook me up with two tickets to the Giants game tomorrow?
（明日のジャイアンツの試合のチケットを２枚手に入れられないかな？）
　
Come on man. Hook me up!
（にいちゃん、まけてーなー！）
　
You're looking for a new TV? Come by my store. I'll hook you up.

Like all of us, I was shocked by yesterday’s tragic incident at River Valley High School. We cannot make sense of what happened. Words fail us because we cannot understand.

We are overwhelmed imagining what the victim’s family are going through. Yesterday morning, they sent off their 13-year-old son to school. Suddenly, without any warning, he is no more.

My heart goes out to his family. I know we cannot properly express our sympathy, or offer much comfort in their sudden calamity. But still, I would like them to know that our thoughts and prayers are with them.

The teachers and students of RVHS are also in shock. We will help you walk through this dark valley, and come to terms with what has happened.

The police are still investigating this case, to find out the motivations behind this tragedy, and if something could have been done to avert it. Let us wait for them to complete their work. Let us not worsen the trauma and grief of the affected families with speculation and rumour.

We place great emphasis on safety in our schools, and the well-being of teachers and students. Our education system is not only about good academic performance, but also helping our kids to grow into happy and well-adjusted persons. If staff or students know a pupil or classmate who seems troubled or under stress, please let the principal or school counsellors know. They will work together with the families to provide help.

Beyond our schools, the pandemic has been tough on everyone. If sometimes things seem too much to bear, please remember help is always available, even if it’s just to talk to someone about what’s on your mind:

Louder for those in the back? ?? What has been your experience with people touching your hair? How do you feel about it? For those who have touched /still touch strangers’ hair (or people who they don’t know for sure would be ok with them touching it, why did / do you do it?)

My worst personal experience with a twisted end : A classmate of mine put her fingers in my hair and I was so over people doing that repeatedly so I also put my fingers in her hair and guess what? SHE GOT PISSED? Best believe I told her off ‘cause double standards and I ??do?? not?? mix. I was never able to comprehend her behaviour. Tsk tsk tsk

Some of my subscribers may know that I study Information Design. Sometimes we get different projects not related directly to graphic design, so this is a project I did with a classmate to create a title sequence for a fictional film.

The story goes around a girl who helps to fix relationships, and thus there are some signs of people arguing and getting "fixed" through her hand. A metaphor of a dollhouse is used throughout.

We chose to work with shadow puppets and cut them out and filmed it, and all editing was done in Premiere Pro and After Effects.

This was produced during studies for Information Design at the University of Pretoria.

The song is a royalty-free track from bensound.
