📰 The dying teenager who wanted world peace and love

When Californian teenager Jeff Henigson was diagnosed with brain cancer and given two years to live, a children's charity granted him the wish of a lifetime. But Jeff didn't choose to go to Disneyland or meet his favourite footballer - Jeff just wanted world peace.
Jeff給診斷患有(diagnosed with) 腦癌(brain cancer),他的一生中唯一願望(the wish of a lifetime)是世界和平(world peace)。
In the summer of 1986, 15-year-old Jeff Henigson was riding his bike to the local electronics shop to buy the last part for a "super laser" he'd been building, when he was hit by a van.
"It's coming in the opposite direction and she doesn't see me and just smashes right into me," Jeff says. "And I'm launched, like a rocket, 10 feet backwards. I land on the back of my head."
Jeff wasn't wearing a helmet, and was knocked unconscious. A few hours later, he woke up in hospital. He seemed to be OK, though, so he was discharged the same day.
But within a few weeks Jeff began having seizures and he returned to the hospital, this time to have a CT scan of his brain.
If it had shown injuries from the cycling accident, Jeff would not have been surprised. But the news was worse than that - the scan revealed a tumor.
"Two things went through my mind," Jeff says. "One was a plan to lose my virginity that summer. And let's just say that did not work out. The second was to complete my laser project."
Jeff was an ambitious teenager, whose dream was to work for Nasa. He believed that the best way to impress them was to build "the most amazing laser" which could bounce a beam off of a reflector that had been left on the moon by Apollo 11.
But the laser was also a way for him to bond with his father, a distant figure, who had served with the US Navy in World War Two.
"I didn't know at the time if that was because of the war or something else. But my father was separate, emotionally, from the rest of us. And I thought, 'Here's this thing we have in common. This fascination with science. This fascination with space.' And that's why I pursued it."
Though Jeff's father never mentioned his experiences in the Pacific when the nuclear bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he would talk, at length, about nuclear weapons, the nuclear threat and the US's relationship with the USSR. And this seems to have had an impact on Jeff.
📌 Jeff解釋他跟爸爸的共同點是迷戀科學(fascination with science)、迷戀太空(fascination with space)。他爸爸詳盡地談及核武器(nuclear weapons)、核威脅(nuclear threat)以及美國跟蘇聯的關係(the US’s relationship with the USSR),這對Jeff有影響。
"There was a fictional film in the early 1980s called The Day After. It was about the Soviet Union dropping nuclear bombs on the US. I was probably 11 years old, and I was scared out of my mind. I would often fall asleep at night and go straight into a nightmare about nuclear war," Jeff remembers.
Jeff hoped not only that he would get that dream job with Nasa, but that the organisation would start to work with the USSR rather than competing with it.
"Even when I was fairly young, I could see the potential for collaboration between the US and Soviet Union," he says. "It just never made sense to me that we were pointing nuclear weapons at each other, when we could be collaborating to do extraordinary things in space."
📌 Jeff 不但希望在NASA工作,而且希望NASA會開始跟蘇聯合作,在太空合作做非凡事情 (collaborating to do extraordinary things in space)。

Eric's English Lounge
Recently, I have gotten quite a few emails asking if I do private tutoring. Some have asked if I have a bushiban or run the page with a team. While our readers know we publish English learning posts, what exactly is it that we do?
★★★★★★★★★★★★
To be completely honest, I am not sure if there is a category suitable for our page. My current positions are a doctoral student and an educational consultant for e-learning companies and policy makers. In addition to hosting my classes, I use the page mainly to provide free resource and perform charitable activities.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
I started the page in 2012 as a lecturer and the general manager of an overseas study company, and the aim was to share learning materials with my students. I would occasionally compile information online, edit them, and publish them for free. I started investing more time around 2014 and 2015, and we had about 20K fans at this point. I did not commercialize the page, so people did not know what I was doing (they literally wrote and asked me). I left my position as the general manager, and I was unsure of my next move.

I did not want to open a test prep center like many suggested. I did not want to sacrifice my ideals to meet business goals, and I felt I could do more to make use of my experience and strengths as a curriculum writer and teacher. I started consulting educational organizations and worked on my own online classes. It was a difficult path because there was simply very little demand for “educational consultants” in Taiwan. I had to carve my own path, and worked with numerous organizations such as ETS-Taiwan and the British Council to do so. Meanwhile, I kept writing and compiling information on our page, and it became arguably one of the largest databanks of free bilingual learning resources in Taiwan.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
It was around late 2016 when I started regularly posting news in English (https://bit.ly/36o3Z1e). I felt that students need to be aware of current events and think critically rather than focusing only on basic linguistic features. While vocabulary and grammar are undoubtedly important to second language learners, there are already ample resources in these domains. Given my interest in international news and years of experience living and working in both Taiwan and the US, I aim to offer language learners a unique perspective in learning. My posts began to cover the news, social issues, and educational editorials. We reached about 30K subscribers around 2018 with this approach.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Early 2020, we broke 50K fans on FB, and I knew it was time for me to post more regularly. I added two people to my team of one, and we started regularly posting bilingual news, education editorials, posts on empathy, and of course, free English learning resources. We also have periodic giveaways of books and educational materials. Our subscribers now include students, parents, and teachers primarily from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the US.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Some have advised me to just completely turn the page into a business since we have significant following. However, I have held back from doing so because I view myself more as a teacher and not a business owner or a social media influencer. It is not all about traffic flow and commercialization. In fact, I place many restrictions on commercial cooperation, turning down opportunities to advertise and work with many large language edu companies.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Currently, Eric’s English Lounge is not a company. I do have online classes through VoiceTube and other platforms, and I do have a team of two editors. However, all other sources of income from collaboration with businesses and influencers on my page are donated to charities in a transparent manner: https://bit.ly/3fKytik. I started this project (http://bit.ly/3990snT) this past year and plan to move the page in a sustainable, non-profit direction.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
I hope to provide as much free resource as I can. You might have noticed that I am in my 40s, a tad older than most online influencers. I come from a low-income, divorced family, and I started working when I was in junior high. I became independent when I turned 18, and took numerous jobs just to make ends meet. I am already fortunate compared to many, as I had some remarkable teachers and received aid and scholarships from the government. Nevertheless, it has been a long climb, and this has allowed me to empathize and connect with some disadvantaged students.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Thus, this is the general background of the page. In all honesty, our page is still growing and evolving. It is used to provide free resources, to spread ideals of empathy, to do charity, and to sustain myself. I aim to continue using the page to provide educational resources, raise awareness of social issues, and offer students diverse perspectives. These are my current goals for this page. After eight years, Eric’s English Lounge is still going strong. May we all continue to learn, think, and grow together.

HK Speech Red Line is a Political Issue Rather than a Legal one (Chapman Chen reports) -- Local Press] (Eng. summary below)
On 22 September, Local Press and Hong Kong Society of Humanity co-held the forum, Red Line for Freedom of Speech in HK, the host being Dr. Chapman Chen, founder of Local Press, speakers including Mr. Wong On-yin (current affairs critic), Mr. Lawrence Lau (Barrister), Dr. Lau Kwai Piu (Chair of HKSH), Mr. Poon King Tai (solicitor). President Xi Jinping, when visiting HK last year, said that any activities endangering national security and challenging the Central authorities touch the red line; HK Chief Executive Carrie Lam often stresses that HK independence is a forbidden red line. Chapman Chen cited Tomi Lahren from Fox News, "Freedom of speech is not just saying what you want to say, but also hearing what you don't want to hear." Wong On-yin insisted that freedom of speech has no bottom line except for the endangering of public order, safety, morals and health. Lau Kwai-piu cited J.S. Mill's on liberty:- "Freedom of speech realizes self-dignity, self-autonomy and equality, and his harm principle. Lawrence Lau pointed out that banning heresies such as Hong Kong independence would victimize those deprived of the opportunity to hear and to decide whether such propositions were meaningful or not. Civilians cannot possibly violate the constitution, they can only be inconsistent with the constitution. Just because Chair of the HK National Party, Chan Ho-tin's, independence advocacy is inconsistent with the Basic Law does not mean he has broken the law. Poon King Tai said that the PRC's constitution stated clearly that all China citizens are entitled to freedom of speech. Mr. Lau, one of the audience, pointed out that China practiced socialist law, forbidding any challenges of the authorities. Chapman Chen quoted Mr Justice Bokhary, "Without democracy, Hong Kong can only have approximation of rule of law." The conclusion was that the red line for freedom of speech in HK is a political problem rather than a legal issue.

This year, the Chinese New Year falls on Friday, February 16th, beginning the year of the Dog.
The holiday lasts for six days. Taiwanese people would grasp any opportunities to go out and travel around. I don't usually go out that much during that time, though. I just hate going to a place where it's overflowing with people and I have to wait in a line for everything. It just drives me crazy. I'd rather stay at home for a cozy and a laid-back holiday. So technically speaking, I am not a fan of the Chinese New Year Holiday.
Well, family gathering might be the only thing that I anticipate. The festival always brings families together all around the world. On the Chinese New Year's Eve, we always feast on a delicious reunion dinner, or you can call it New Year's Eve dinner.
A big part of the tradition is that the married adults will give red envelopes to children or unmarried young adults. The lucky money inside is said to bring prosperity and good fortune in the coming year, The color red symbolizes luck.
On the same day, people stay up late until midnight and watch the fireworks and light firecrackers.
The next day, we hang up spring couplets on both sides of the door in order to welcome good fortune.

would rather文法 在 [文法] would rather would sooner - 看板Eng-Class - 批踢踢 ...
https://goo.gl/BsXDik
https://goo.gl/X2KC2R
would rather
=would sooner
=would just as soon
=had rather
=had sooner
I would rather my dad hadn't given me birth.
= I had sooner my dad hadn't given me birth.
或是
She would rather work for him for free than work for me being paid.
=She had rather work for him for free than work for me being paid.
或是
My mom would rather I didn't tell my friends about the domestic scandals.
= My mom would just as soon I didn't tell my friends about the domestic
scandals.
