Mark Twain is one of America’s favorite authors. He was born on this day in 1835 in the town of Florida, in the state of Missouri, and spent his childhood in nearby Hannibal, MO. As a young man, wrote a lot and worked as a typesetter before following his dream of navigating the Mississippi on paddle wheel steamboats. He also kept writing during this time. Two of Twain’s masterpieces are “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, ” full of humor, adventure, and American spirit, which take place on and along the Mississippi River. Next time you travel to the United States, consider visiting middle America, take a paddleboat on the Mississippi, and catch a glimpse of Twain’s boyhood world!
